It was the end of the activities. We had a competition to pick winners. Students wanted a debate, so the teachers held one. I went up against a lot of people. At last, I was representing the girls. To my astonishment, Caleb was representing the boys.
"Alright guys, the last round will be the hardest. The topic is 'Should Children Rather Follow Their Dreams Than Listen to Their Parents?', now Aurora, choose whether you want to agree or disagree," Ms. Mills asked me. I was shocked. The topic was directed towards me.
My parents forced me to follow what they wanted. I never had a chance to do what I wanted. I was determined to do this. "Definitely agree." Caleb look worried. He knew that the topic hurts me. "I guess I'm going to disagree then," he answered, trying to look calm.
I thought of so many reasons for my part. The example could be me. Even though I was a bright student, I wasn't happy. Dream jobs can be a reality. What man has done can be done again. You don't need high paying jobs, you need a loving family and trustworthy friends.
I explained my reasons and I got cheers from my friends. Caleb looked at me. His face looked like he pitied me. "Children should listen to their parents because parents have better experiences and they will find the best for their children. They fear for your safety and health. So, they would keep us away from things that will harm us even though we want to. It's true you need a loving family, if you listen to your parents, they will love you more," Caleb explained. I felt like a knife has stabbed my heart.
At last, the results were in. Caleb won. People cheered and clapped for him. He walked towards me and shook my hand. "I hope you will be okay," he said, pulling me into a hug. At least he is happy.
