Angel spent the next couple days spending all her time at work and at the hospital with Nyda. When Nyda finally went home with Carl Angel continued her visits. She would go straight from work to see them. She often cooked for them and spent time trying to help Nyda relax. When she was finished with her visit, she would head home and spend a little bit of time with Justin before starting the whole cycle over again in the morning.

Justin was also busy. He spent such of his time at work and looking into any information he could find to help Angel better understand what was to come. He hated her not being around, but he understood her need to be with Nyda.

"Angel, you need to sleep." Justin turned over and looked at the little sub sitting up in bed reading. "You are only one person. You need rest."

"I'm fine. I promise." Angel smiled weakly. "I won't be much longer. I promise."

"You liar. You said that about an hour ago." Justin looked up at her sleepily. "Nyda wouldn't want you to worry like this. She loves you."

"She goes in for surgery in a couple days." Angel whimpered and clung to the books and papers.

"And then treatment. I know. But you can't work yourself to death. Nyda wants to be able to see her best friend." Justin turned over. "I'm right. And you know it. Go to bed."

Angel sighed. "Yes, sir." Angel placed her reading material gently on the night stand and turned off the lights. "I love you too you know."

"I know. and I love you. Otherwise I'd be very angry at you keeping me up so late.." Justin grumbled and sighed.

"Goodnight..."

"Goodnight, little one."

....

Nyda had refused visits after her surgery. Her mother had come to town. They hadn't talked in a long time. But her mother dropped everything. She came down as soon as she had settled everything. She was a very serious and old fashion woman. She had often argued with her daughter about her relations with women and her domination of men. She felt it "wasn't the way the world should be". But now there was no talk of that. She sat beside her daughters bed and devoted herself to tending to her child's every need.

The surgery had gone very well. Her doctors said she was healing very well. Minimal swelling. Minimal irritaion. Good blood circulation. Nyda's mom thanked God for that. She now looked towards treatments and the future.

"They're pretty hopeful." Carl whispered into the phone while Nyda slept. "She doesn't want to admit it but she's scared." Carl curled up on the arm of the sofa. He listened intently for both any sound from Nyda and Angel's response.

Angel sat outside looking up at the sky. It was chilly but she loved it. She liked the way her skin tightened. She felt more alive. "Has her mother been any help?" Angel felt bitter. Nyda had refused to see her. She didn't want to sit on the side lines and wait for her bestfriend. She wanted to be there.

"She's been cooking a lot." Carl sighed heavily and looked towards the closed door that had once led to Angel's room. "I think its helpful to have someone to constantly peck at Nyda."

"If you need anything please call. I'm more than willing to help." Angel frowned and began to trace the constellations with her finger.

"We know." Carl bit the inside of his cheek. "Angel, she doesn't want you to see her like this. She's tried to get me to stay with friends too." He slowly leaned back. "Don't take her distance personal. She's having a rough time."

"I'm so scared of losing her, Carl." Angel felt her throat hurting. "I love both of you. And I can't imagine my life..." Angel choked back tears.

"Want to get some coffee tomorrow? Nyda goes in for treatment and doesn't want me in the room with her."

"Its a date."

...

Carl sat across from me. He absentmindedly toyed with the lid. The coffeeshop around us seemed to completely fade into the background. I was anxious. Carl was anxious. It was going to be an insufferably long day.

"Why the long faces? I've never seen a coffee date that was so depressing." The girl behind the counter who had taken our orders had come out and was cleaning the tables.

"We're not together." My voice was so flat and sharp. She pulled back almost as soon as the sound hit her ears. "We're just good friends."

Carl looked up at me sadly. "Why am I so empty inside?" Had he been drinking?

The coffee girl looked awkward. "Do you want to talk about it? Isn't that supposed to help?"

"No," Carl whimpered. "Thank you." The poor girl nodded. She left us to our misery.

I went back to the office. I bought Justin a coffee. He probably would still be sitting at his desk when I got back. He would be yelling into his phone and staring at his computer. He was much sexier when he wasn't working.

"Big One," I knocked on his door and poked my head inside. "Justin?" He wasn't there...

I went back to my desk. I don't like black coffee. I hoped I'd be able to find some sugar packets. Instead I found a note. It was in Justin's hectic handwriting.

I am meeting Sammie. She thinks she had a break through. Stay in my office until I get back. I'm bringing pasta salads and chicken parm.

I smiled to myself and went back to his office. I went to sit in his chair and logged onto his computer. I checked my email. Nothing. Not even an ad. I decided to go through my social media. Always a lot of fun there.

Carl had posted a picture of Nyda sleeping at home. Ann was eating some fancy bagels. Meg was sharing some new recipes she probably wanted to try but never would take the time to make. Through all the cute pictures of animals and babies I found nothing too interesting.

I was so bored. I just wanted Justin to come back. He was gone for what felt like forever. I had only been back about thirty minutes.

I heard knocking at the door. "Oh, Angel," it was Sam. "Justin should be back by now. He left like ten minutes before me."

I felt my stomach turning to knots. "I should call..."

It rang. Once. Twice. Thr-

"Hey, Sweetie. I got the wrong order I'm running late. I'll be back in a few." Justin answered. His voice made me smile.

"He's almost back. He grabbed us lunch... Or dinner." I looked at the. clock. It was almost three. "A very late lunch." Both Sam and Justin chuckled. "Did you get me some lemonade?" I smiled.

"Yes. I swear you're addicted." I could hear the eyeroll in his voice.

"You're the absolute best!" I smiled and looked at Sam.

She smiled back at me and waved. She mouthed, "I'm going to get back to work."

I wondered if Justin and I would have enough time when he got back to lock the door and have some fun. I was not handing stress in a healthy way. I needed a new hobby or something.

"Angel," Justin came in and handed me a big styrofoam container. "For you. No tomatoes." He smiled and gently kissed my forehead.

The rest of my day was spent in Justin's office. He let me sit on the sofa in the corner. He was quiet. I loved watching him work. When it was time to go home I was more than ready. It had been a long day at the office. I wanted nothing more than to curl up with Justin in bed. I loved him so much. Even with everything going on He always knew just what to do to make me feel better.
