Alex continued her routine for days. But one fateful day as she waited for the lights on the porch they never turned on. She went in puzzled where Andrea and Isabella were waiting for her. But almost immediately Alex saw moving shadows outside the window.
They had found her.
"Andrea take Isabella and hide in the bath tub NOW!" she whispered. Urgency lingered in her tone. She rushed to the fireplace and pulled out a loose brick. Inside, a gun was hidden, fully loaded.
"What the- "
"Do you want to live? Do you want your daughter to live? Then do exactly as I say."
Alex ran out. Soon she was engaged in a fierce gunfight. Taking cover behind trees, she agilely avoided all the attacks and shot down the three men who had come to attack her. When the situation had settled, she called out to Andrea.
He rushed out. Terror was apparent on his face but shock had stolen all words. Alex rushed him into a car. "Keep driving till you reach your brother's. Don't stop for anything." She looked at Isabella and waved to her. "Best friends forever."
Andrea glared at Alex. "Who are you?"
"There isn't time now. Go."
The truth was she didn't know the answer. She was once a hero. A fugitive. A criminal. An agent. But now she was lost.
Geneva
It had been a week since the incident. Alex had been back on the run. She had come as far as Geneva. As she waited in a bar, two suspicious men entered. Recognizing the threat, she quickly headed out. She puts her hood up and zips her jacket. She looks in a window and sees a man in black. She quickens her steps.
In a loading dock, she steps out and pulls out a gun. As the man approaches, she gets ready to fire but when she stands in front of her, her jaw drops.
"Hey Alex."
Alex was overjoyed to see Ryan. Secretly, she was holding back the urge to kiss him. "Hey."
At a laundromat in Geneva
"So they found you?" Ryan asked.
"Who are they Ryan? Who are they this time?"
"They're the same people that took Shelby."
Alex gasps.
"I came here looking for the conscience code. The last time I saw it it was in a safety deposit box here. I know you know where it is."
"I destroyed it."
"You destroyed it?" Ryan yelled.
"Yes." Continued Alex. "I burnt it. After I memorised it."
"Good, the write it down now." Said Ryan as he grabbed a paper from a pin board.
"No. It's the code to all safety systems to all systems in the US. You swore to protect it with life."
"If they don't get it they'll kill Shelby. They found you. They have means and money."
Alex thinks for a brief second. "I'm not giving you the code. But I'm coming with you. We'll free Shelby together. Deal?"
Ryan sighs. "Yes"
As they walked towards the car, a million thoughts race through her mind. Alex knew she couldn't stay with Ryan for too long, it would only endanger him. But she had seen him after so long, she didn't want to let him go this time.
"Alex," said Ryan softly. "Why'd you leave? One night you were right there next to me. The next morning you were gone."
"I..." she stopped. She couldn't just show up after 3 years and say something that would tear apart his life. "I wanted a clean slate. You weren't one."
Ryan looked at her in disbelief. "Alex, Shelby is my fiancé."
Alex was shaken. "did you just say that you proposed to my best friend." She smiled and shook her head. She held in her tears. "Lets just finish this so I can go home.
IN NYC.
It had been a long tiring flight. But that's the thing about being an agent. You don't get any breaks. Not without a cost. Owen Hall, now the deputy director of the FBI, was waiting for them. They had informed them of their arrival. Since Roarke's men in the government were still hunting Alex, everything was sort of underground.
"Good to see you Alex?"
"You too Owen." Alex felt safer already. Owen was one of the people she trusted the most. "Let's get Shelby back."
"You're a hero again Alex. Should I reinstate you in the FBI?"
"No. I'm going back as soon as we find Shelby."
Ryan looked at her and they locked eyes. They often did this in the past. Ryan knew that her job was her life. She must have been hurt knowing of him and Shelby.
Ryan had missed Alex more than anyone else. His biggest fear was that something happened to her. He was extremely relieved to see her alive. Probably his next greatest fear was that deep down he still loved her.
"Then we assemble a black ops team." Owen smiled. "oh this will be fun."
