WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The chart below shows numbers of incidents and injuries per 100 million passenger miles travelled (PMT) by transportation type in 2002.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

*ANSWER:

The given chart provides information about how many incidents and injuries were caused by vehicles every 100 million passenger travelled (PMT) in 2002. As it is shown in the graph, demand response appears to have the highest numbers of incidents and injuries, whereas commuter rail ranks the lowest among all mentioned criteria.

The number of incidents caused with demand purpose is over 250 per 100 million PMT, more than five times as many as that of heavy rail in the same year. The number of injuries occurred of demand purpose, though not as high as the incidents number, still took the first place comparing to that of other types of transportation.

Commuter rail happens to have caused the least numbers of incidents and injuries, with only around 20 cases each, matching with just one third of those of bus.

Overall, for all transportation, despite the fact that many incidents took place, not as much injuries were caused.

WRITING TASK 2

Write about the following topic.

People in all modern societies use drugs, but today's youth are experimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

*ANSWER:

It happens to be the cruel reality that in today's world, the experience of drug use is no longer rare among the youth, and unfortunately, trying out drugs has become something very tempting, even for those at a young age. There are multiple reasons leading to this incident, and it has caused numerous issues. This essay will analyze the problem, then suggest some possible methods against youth drug abuse.

Neglecting a child can make way for the approach of negative influences. Children, whose parents do not make enough time for their family, are most likely to befriend with the wrong people, which later on leads to many wrong-doings including drugs. Also, it is not just the care that the child lacks, but the knowledge as well. For instance, when they are not provided with adequate information about drugs and side effects, it is nearly impossible for them to make wise choices as they face the temptation.

Using drugs can bring your health to a horrendous downfall, mentally and physically. Especially when this occurs really early, one's life can be seriously shortened and damaged. For example, many young addicts ended their lives when they barely reached the age of 30. Also, a society in which a high percentage of the youngsters have trouble with drugs is the society that would struggle most. The young are the future, the workforce at its full swing, and no hope would ever exist if they are already messed up with drugs.

In short, the inadequacy of attention and education given to children are main reasons that caused youth drug abuse, and this can lower human's life expectancy as well as our life standards. More information about drugs should be provided to people by educators and schools, and laws against drugs should be tightened by the authorities.
