CHAPTER TWO: Others in This World
I wake up in my bed, hugging my pistol. I snorted quietly to myself. As if it could protect me without bullets. I get out of my warm bed, the protected feeling, I always get from my bed, wearing off quickly.
I get dressed into my normal outfit, jean shorts, my old red Converse, and a white tank top. I put my red hair up into a ponytail, as usual. I can hear the moaning of the dead outside, but a little ways away, I hear something I never thought I would ever hear again.
Gun shots. Humans. People like me are out there! I rush to my window, and look through one of the cracks in the wood covering my window, and see all the zombies from my yard, running down the road, headed toward the shots.
I am so excited, but I remember that I can't go anywhere. Zombies will be covering the entire area anywhere near here. My excited feelings go down the drain.
I head downstairs in a slump, saddened to know I will be alone now. I try the radio, looking for anything; signal, voices, anything! Nilch. Nada. Nope. None. Nothing.
I head up to bed, and crawled into the warm sheets, and cry until I fall asleep from all the tears.
I wake up to sounds downstairs. I hop out of bed, and grab my knives, and silently slink through my door.
I creep down the stairs quietly, until I hit a creaky step. The noises stop completely.
Silence.
Then soft footsteps echoed around the silent house.
I start climbing back up the stairs, but I trip and fall down to the floor at the bottom of the stairs.
I freeze in my position on the floor. I wait for my death to come. A barrel of a gun is pressed against my skull. Then a voice speaks.
"Get up. I know you aren't infected, but if you try to get me, consider your life over, buddy." A velvet voice speaks in a hard, cold tone.
I follow orders, and stand up, my back to the person. I feel a hand on my shoulder. The soft hand gently slips down to my hand, where it grabs my knives, leaving me defenseless.
The hand heads back to my shoulder, and it spins me around. I lock eyes with the person. I am shocked to find such cold beautiful green eyes staring back at me. The eyes start to turn gentle and soft when the man speaks again.
"Who are you? And how long have you been here for?" He says in his perfect voice. I shiver a little, and it is not from the cold air in here.
I stare at the floor, as if it is the most beautiful thing in the world.
"I'm Ronni, and I have been here for seven months. This is my home. Who are you, if I can ask...?" I ask hesitantly.
"I'm Ryder. Are there anymore survivors living here?" Ryder asks. I shake my head, my heart clenching at the thought of my family.
I look him up and down as discreetly as I can. He's hot, that's easy to tell. He's wearing combat boots, worn out jeans, and a tight black T-shirt. He has short black hair, emerald green eyes, and a jagged, rough face, his stubble making him look even more attractive.
He looked me up and down, not-so-discreetly. Why was he even looking me when I was not even that pretty?
"Do you have a group somewhere, Ryder?" I ask him.
"No, sorry. I'm a lone wolf, I guess. I had a group, but a horde got 'em." He said, shrugging casually at the end.
"Er, well I am so sorry about that. I'm alone, too. My parents were taken last month. Same as what happened to your group. My sister and I were stuck here for a little while, and I decided we should barricade the doors and windows. We went into town, but only one of us came back..." I cut off because I didn't want to cry like a little baby in front of Ryder.
"I'm sorry. It must've been hard. Like it was on the rest of us. You gonna come with me or do you wanna wait to die here, cause a horde is on its way right now. I assure you." He said, hard voice back in its place.
I thought it over for a minute, while Ryder was looking out of the front door for the zombies.
"I'll come."
