CHAPTER FIVE: Hunter and the Z.K.’s

Ryd and I were leading the group, Ryd protecting me, and Sam at the back with Maxi.

Maxi and Sammy always had their hands locked together, weary eyes always on the look-out.

Ryder always stayed close to me, probably just protecting me. I couldn’t help but feel super safe.

“Whoa… guys, did you hear something?” Maxi says. Sam stops walking almost immediately, Ryder and me following suit.

Max was right; a second after we stopped moving, we heard some ruffling of paper or something. We all looked at each other, nodding once. Sam and Ryder started approaching the noise.

They locked eyes, and Sam nodded at Ryder, and they disappeared into a building, leaving me and Maxi out in the open.

Maxi looked kinda nervous without Sam, so I grabbed her hand as a friendly gesture, and she smiled at me.

We then heard some sounds coming out of the room. I froze. So did Maxi. We heard moaning and someone screamed.

We sprinted into the house to see a group of zombies around Sam and Ryder… They looked fine though, so who screamed?

I looked around, and spotted a female and a boy sitting on the ground. The woman looked like she had collapsed, but the boy was just holding her hand, his shoulders violently shaking with quiet sobs.

She looked to be quiet older than him, from what I could see. She looked at least fifty, while the boy could be twenty.

I looked back at Ryder and Sam, and saw Ryder staring at me, fear in his eyes. I looked at him confused.

“RONNIE! LOOK OUT!” He screamed, and I was then tackled to the ground.

I twisted around, fighting, to look at the zombie that had pinned me to the ground. It was an older man, and he looked around thirty years old, and boy, was he strong! I couldn’t push him off, and I was already getting tired of struggling.

He kept getting closer and closer to the flesh on my collar bone, but I kept fighting, knowing I would pull through if I didn’t give up.

After another minute of fighting, I could feel my arms start to shake, and they nearly gave up on me. But before they could fall back from the zombie’s chest, someone jerked him off of me, and onto the floor, where the person shot him.

I looked up, and it was the boy that had been previously lying on the floor crying. He had like brown eyes, nearly golden, and swishy blonde hair. He had some muscles on him, too. Not as much as Ryder, but he was packed. He wore Nike’s, some jeans, and a faded, old red T-shirt.

He held a hand out for me to take, and I accepted it, full-heartedly, thankful for him saving me. He pulled me off of the ground swiftly, yet not forceful enough to make me ram into him.

“Thank you.” I said. It was short, but it came out sounding really grateful.

He nodded at me. “No problem.” He stated back.

Ryder looked at him, then said, “What happened before we got here?”

“My mother and I were cornered, and whenever you came, I guess it attracted more, because of your heartbeats, and stuff like that, so they overpowered us, like you saw. Now, she’s gone…” He said, breaking off at the end.

Ryder looked at him sympathetically, and placed a hand on the stranger’s shoulder, trying to be kind. The guy shrugged him off, and Ryder looked offended.

“What’s your name, then, guy?” Sam asked, his gun trained on the older woman on the floor.

“My name’s Hunter, Hunter Pike. Who are y’all?” He asked.

“Well, I’m Ronnie, that’s Ryder, and this is Sammy and Maxi. Nice to meet you, but sorry we had to meet like this…” I said awkwardly at the end of my sentence.

Hunter’s eyes met mine, sadness flashing through them.

A split second later, Hunter’s mother springs up from the floor, and launches herself at Ryder’s back. Sam, being prepared for this moment, shoots immediately, killing her instantly.

Hunter flinches whenever the gun shot rings out. After Sam shot, more gunshots started firing in the distance. Hunter jumps, and grips my hand in his, and rushes us towards the back door, Ryder and them all following us. After we exit the back door, we make our way to the front of the house through an alley.

As we make it to the exit point of the alley, Hunter tugs me behind a huge dumpster in the alley, the rest ducking down with us. Hunter points up, and quietly peaks over the lid of the dumpster, motioning for us to do it as well.

We do, and we see people in uniforms. They all have rifles in hand, at the ready.

They all split up, and a man with a scar on his eye, and a grim face, steps to the front, quickly scanning the area. We duck down whenever he gets close to the dumpster, and we stay down for a minute.

We stay down until the footsteps start to lead to the east, and then we peak over the lid again, to see them walking down the abandoned road, backs turned towards us.

“Okay, who was that, Hunter?” I ask, whispering. Ryder, Sam, and Maxi all look at him, waiting for an answer. Hunter looks at us with a pale face.

“Those people, would be the Z.K.’s.”
