Yaz roamed the Tardis without any real plan of where exactly she wanted to go. After Graham, Ryan and Yaz decided to travel with the Doctor, the two men had retreated to their rooms, to recover from the previous days of adventures.
Since the Tardis had an infinite number of rooms, each of them had been able to have a room all by themselves, with all the necessary items they needed.
She had not realized that she should have packed clothes before running back to the Tardis, but now Yaz was incredibly happy to have a large selection of clothes in her room that fit any purpose and any time they would land in.
While the boys were resting in their beds and the Tardis stopped flying after a while in order for everyone to hear the steady snoring of Graham through the corridors, Yaz was not able to rest. She had tried to find the doctor, but she was nowhere to be seen.
She paused just before a turn to take in the scent that came from the door to her right. Like an oasis of freshness and salt, it hung in the air as a contrast to the otherwise rather metallic smell that followed her everywhere in the Tardis. Yaz hesitated. If the doctor had not wanted her to look through the rooms, she would have said something.
She held her ear to the door. Maybe it was a second exit and they had come to a halt somewhere near the ocean. "Do not be a coward.", She said and pushed down the doorknob.
She did not look at an open sea as she had expected, but at a wide swimming pool filled with deep blue water. On the left side were a few loungers with golden frames and bourdeaux-colored covers. Next to them were some large folded towels, which almost invited her to jump into the water, only to wrap herself in one of the towels and fall onto one of the loungers afterwards.
Yaz took a few steps forward and carefully touched the water with her right hand. The water was pleasantly warm and it did not smell like the usual sanitary chlorine, which you could smell in every swimming pool, but it rather smelled like salt, the same scent which led her here.
She thought for a moment that she could just get rid of her clothes and do some laps when she noticed a small black bundle on one of the loungers. Somebody had probably forgotten it there. As far as she knew, she was the only one of the Doctor's friends who had been in here so far, so it belonged to either the Doctor or a former fellow traveler.
She walked cautiously along the edge of the pool, picked up the bundle, which looked like a wallet, and sat down on the edge of the chair. Carefully, she opened the button closure and a wide band stocked with various photos of men swung out and fell down on Yaz's lap. Confused, she turned the pictures over and looked closely at each one of them. Each picture had a man in them, some were young, some were rather old. One man wore a scarf that was way too long for him, the other one had a vest with question marks on it. The last two pictures were of slightly younger men that were gazing sadly at Yaz.
When she wanted to lift the last picture, she felt a paper on the back of it. She turned it over and looked straight into the face of a gray-haired man whose eyebrows were pinched into an angry grimace. He looks nice. In contrast to the remaining photos, which were plugged into foil attached to the leather, this picture seemed to have been subsequently glued on. She turned the photos over again and eyed the faces one more time. Who are these people? Friends? Relatives?
"You know Yaz, I do not want to jump to any conclusions, but most people usually swim in their bathing suits. I mean, unless you're from the 24th century, but I'm pretty sure I was in the 21st century when I met you, besides, you do not smell like the 24th century, they smell a bit weird, you know, but you on the other hand, have a rather nice, flowery smell. And the clothes they wear, I have to take you there at some point! "
Yaz was pulled out of her thoughts and looked, her cheeks blushing, at the door where the Doctor was leaning, arms crossed and looking at her with a mischievous grin. The Doctor stopped like that for a moment, but then left the doorframe and walked over to Yaz, sitting down opposite her on the other lounger.
The Doctor smiled at Yaz, which made her blush even more, before turning her attention to the bundle of photos in her lap, and her eyes, which had previously been framed with wrinkles , suddenly turned into a sad and thoughtful look.
The two of them sat in silence for a while, while the doctor was staring sadly into the distance. "Can I do anything?", Yaz looked worriedly at her and felt guilty that she had entered this room and found the pictures, apparently the sight had touched a sore spot.
She gently put her hand over the doctor's, but the woman quickly pulled her hand away.
"Sorry. I did not mean- "" No, that's okay. It's only...sometimes I forget who I am, where my head is, you know? ", She was interrupted by the doctor, who looked up again and smiled at her with a big wide grin." Do you want to go swimming? ", she asked Yaz, but she shook her head. "Another time maybe," she said, immediately cursing herself. Another time? You won't get another chance, but before she could correct herself, the Doctor shrugged and replied: "Fancy a tour through the rest of the Tardis? ", her grin widened and Yaz could only stare into the joyous face of the Doctor. "Yeah, sure!"
