Leraj's POV

My heart was heavy when I read the note she's left on her table, underneath her old vambraces. Her sword is gone and so is the red and black outfit she'd had hanging on her stand. Her pauldron and greaves are there though.

The paper crunched into a palm as I stood and made my way to my room. What done was done. I couldn't do any more.

It was Hendrickson's idea to stir the fire in her heart about her family's 'death'. And whatever Hendrickson commanded meant I had to listen. Even if it meant causing her emotional pain.

As soon as the door to my room clicked shut, I stripped and changed into dark blue pants and a dark grey shirt. On with my boots, then two short swords that hadn't seen the light of day since I'd been Hendrickson's pawn. Over top, I laced my cloak into place and flicked the hood up.

A look in the mirror told me I wouldn't be recognised. Now to the next stage of my plan. With Estra gone and Hendrickson turning a blind eye to me for some time, I was free to do as I pleased.

And that meant only one thing.

With a click of my fingers, I summoned Heido. He eyed me curiously and then the room. I normally never summoned him indoors.

"I need you to do what you do best. There are some pesky demons with annoying eyes. Kill the small ones, including the foul bird that keeps sitting on the gutter across from Estra's room," I asked of him.

From his throat came something close to a laugh, all deep and guttural, before his fur rippled and bones cracked. His form shrunk to less than half his original size. Then I faced with a hybrid chicken with purple feathers and plume. Heido regarded me with two beady red eyes and flew to the window.

I opened it a crack and he flew out, the colour of his body draining away until he was invisible to all. With a grim smile, I shut the window. That would handle Hendrickson's minions. As long as Heido didn't stray too close to the larger, more vicious ones, he'd be fine.

Now it was time to handle the escape plan; for when Estra came back, the world she'd been living in would be turned on its head.
