Anna's POV

"Watch out!"

I turned just in time to duck out of the way of the rugby ball charging my way. Chuckling my best friend Landon made his way across the car park towards me.

"Landon! How many times do I have to say that one of the times you throw that thing at me I'm not gonna duck in time and it's gonna hit me?!" I all but yelled in his ear.

"You always duck in time!" Landon exclaimed.

"Just because I 'always' duck in time doesn't mean it's not gonna catch me off guard one day!" I huffed.

Making my way into school I walked down the narrow corridor of Hall Cross High towards my locker outside form, nearing the locker I saw that Jasmine one of Landon's 'friends' standing waiting for him. Great now he's gonna ditch me like he always does I thought to myself. I'm going to be by myself until he's finished with her and until he finds his second 'flavour of the day' that he would take home, how his mum stood for it was beyond me, although it's understandable because Landon doesn't listen in class, to his mum or anyone else he just does what he wants, when he wants. How we ended up as best friends is a question we all wanted an answer to, we were polar opposites, while Landon was the popular jock, I was the stand off, shove-my-head-in-a-book kind of girl. Although we were best friends we never really see each other during the school day as Landon sits with his jock and 'flavour' friends, and I sit in the corner on 'my' table by myself as I didn't have any other friends besides Landon, he was the only person to know some small details of my life. Like how I lost my mum.

He doesn't, however, know what's going on at home....

Oh yes, how silly of me here I am blabbering away and you know nothing about me! Well, my name is Anna Laney Johnson I'm 15 soon to be sixteen in May and live with my drunken dad. This may sound maddening but even though he comes home drunk and angry and sometimes beats me, I still see him as the same dad who looked in my room at the shadows for the big scary monsters that go boo in the night, the same dad that took me to the park at 6 in the morning because I couldn't sleep, the same dad that told me he loved me and always would no matter what. I love my dad always have and always will no matter what anyone says I can't hate my only remaining family.

As I reached my locker I put in the code and shoved my P.E bag along with the books that I would need later in the week and put in the books that I was missing for today. Slamming the door shut I turned around ready to walk to class only to see Landon still standing there, no Jasmine, huh wonder what's wrong with him I thought. He seemed to be staring right at me. I waved my hand in front of his face trying to get his attention. Only when I noticed where he was staring did I stop, looking down at my shoulder that had slipped out of my black cardigan I could see the big purple angry bruise staring at me. Quickly I pulled the cardigan back over my shoulder but I knew it was too late, he had seen and must have been staring for a while as Jasmine had left, and she only leaves when being ignored.

Grabbing my arm Landon dragged me outside and towards his car at the front of school. Unlocking the doors of his flashy red convertible he shoved me inside and was in the driver's seat faster than I had ever seen him move. Locking the doors he turned to face me. "How?" Landon asked.

He need not as any more I knew what he was asking, "I fell when I was walking down the stairs and knocked my shoulder on the banister rail" I lied. I feel so guilty whenever this happens having to lie gets hard but also easier each time.

"How, don't give me any of that rubbish Anna" He replied, his calm exterior slowly breaking to see he was becoming impatient.

"I told you I fell down the stairs!"

"You sure? It's a big bruise to come out of falling down the stairs." Landon looked sceptical, disbelieving.

"Yes, now can we go to class before we're late you know I don't want a mark on my record!" I asked nervously, the nerves could easily be mistaken.

"Ok Anna, I'll see you after school? I could give you a lift if you wanted?" He all but demanded.

"No, I'm fine it's not far to walk and I need to stop by the supermarket tonight anyway for some milk I spilt it last night when I had some cereal for tea." The lies came easier than I thought they would, than they should but at this moment I couldn't find it in me to care about the lie all I was bothered was that he didn't find out.

Landon slowly unlocked the doors to the convertible, I climbed out and shut the door swinging my old battered backpack onto my back and stalked off to class. Just makin it to form in time for the bell signalling to get to the designated class. Sitting down at the back of the classroom near the window to watch the time go by until first lesson, I pulled out a notebook and began writing the list of jobs that needed to be done before my dad returned home from his regular trip to the pub.
