Chapter 1
My name is Katniss Everdeen-Mellark. I am 39 years old. I survived the Hunger Games twice, and a war. It's been 22 years since the war with Snow. 22 years since my little sister died. She would've been 36 now. I killed Coin. Snow is dead. Paylor is the new president.
I am married to Peeta Mellark. I have two wonderful children. I live in my home, District 12. We rebuilt most of what we had before they bombed 12, some people are still building houses. I couldn't be happier, here with my family.
I sit on my couch, staring at the blank TV, thinking. Suddenly, from the war with Snow, my thoughts come to my mother. After the war, she went to District 4 to be a nurse, without saying good-bye. It's not that she dosen't like me or anything, she just couldn't come back here. With my dad's grave here, and now Prim's . . . She couldn't bear it. She does visit, though. She comes a few times a year. She came for my wedding, of course. And my children's birth. The last time I saw her was my son's third birthday. That was two years ago.
And then, my thoughts changed once more, to someone I haven't seen since the war. Someone who was my best friend, and hunting partner. Someone who killed my sister. Someone . . . who's now dead to me. And I can't even say his name without clenching my fists.
Then, I heard a scream that snapped me out of my thoughts. My little girls scream. I jumped up from the couch and ran outside from the back door into the meadow where she plays. When I opened the door, I sighed.
My husband picked my little girl up and spun her around in a circle. My husband has the biggest smile on his face. I love his smile. His blond hair and blue eyes hasn't changed 22 years ago.
And my girl? My first born child. Willow. Well, she has dark hair like me and blue eyes like her father. She's 7 years old. Very tall for her age. She's already acting like a lady, and is very protective about her brother. She is absolutely beautiful.
I look to my right and see my son chasing after them. His name is Rye, named after a kind of bread. Of course, because his father is a baker. He's chubby and short, but very adorable. He has gray eyes, like me and blond hair like his father. He is 5 years old.
When Rye finally caught up to his father and older sister, Peeta grabbed him and spun him around with Willow tied up in his other arm. Yes, Peeta's strong. They are all laughing and smiling, playing in the meadow. I can't help but smile.
I walk outside to play with them. When Peeta sees me, he drops the kids, hugs me and kisses me gently when he let's go. Rye struggles to get up from the ground, but when he finally accomplishes his goal, he runs to me and hugs my legs tightly. I bend down and kiss him on the forehead. Willow walks over to me and hugs me.
"Your finally up from that long nap." Peeta says with a smile.
"Yeah, I heard a scream and thought Willow was hurt." I say relieved that she's okay.
"Nope, we're just playing." says Peeta.
"Can I play with you guys?" I ask.
"Yes! Mommy please play with us!" Rye begs.
"Of course you can play with us!" says Peeta.
And the rest of the day, I play outside in the meadow with my family. My wonderful family. I love them with all my heart.
______
"Dinner time!" calls Peeta from the kitchen.
I turn off the TV and my kids run to the kitchen and sit down. They love Peeta's food. So do I. Whenever Peeta calls us to breakfast, lunch or dinner, the kids are there before he has a chance to sit down. I put the TV remote on the table and walk to the kitchen. I sit down beside Peeta and take in the smell of the delicious spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. The kids are already half way through their food.
"Kids, slow down. It's not a race." I say to them.
"But it's soooo good!" says Rye.
"Yeah, I can't stop eating!" Willow says as she twirls her fork around the spaghetti.
"I know, but you have to eat slowly. You can't eat too fast, or you'll get a stomach ache." I say.
After a few arguments, I finally convince them to slow down. After dinner, we all gather on the couch in the living room to watch a movie. We take a vote whether to watch Despicable Me 2 or Wreck-It-Ralph. We end up watching Despicable Me 2. I cuddle up next to Peeta. Willow sits next to him and Rye lays his chubby little head on my lap.
______
I open my eyes and look at my surroundings. The movie seems to be done because it's scrolling down the credits. I look at the clock and it reads 10 o'clock. I look around me and realize my family has changed the position we were in when the movie started. Now, my heads on Peeta's shoulder, Willow's head is on his lap, and Rye is on the floor drooling.
I shake Peeta's leg and he wakes up immediately. He looks down at me and yawns.
"Hey," I say quietly.
"Hey," He echoes. "What time is it?"
"Ten. We should go to bed." I say.
Peeta nods. I get up from the couch and pick up Rye from the floor. Peeta picks up Willow and I follow him upstairs. Peeta walks into Willow's room and I walk into Rye's. I walk to his bed and gently put him down. I grab the covers and pull it up to his chin. Before I walk out, I kiss his forehead and whisper a good-night to him.
I walk to my room and wait for Peeta to come in. When he does, he slides into bed beside me and lays down. I rest my head on his strong arm and fall asleep instantly. It's not long before I wake up from a terrible nightmare.
