I was walking home from football practice
when I felt a cloud lurking behind me
Then I heard the sound of some winged minace
with a smell kinda like animal peeTurning I saw a blanket of grasshoppers
Scores of them behind me, totally black
now with a smell worse than soiled diapers
I was feeling bugs all over my backI then closed both eyes and also my lips
Trying to breathe gently just through my nose
It seemed like hours before this would ellipse
as I was covered, now, from hair to toesI worried I'd sneeze or, worse, suffocate
I could not wait long for them to abateTheir wing movement was scratching on my skin
There must have been millions of them on me
Finally their presence began to thin
All of a sudden, again, I could seeAll around I saw them dead on the earth
The scent of death was now throughout the air
but dead grasshoppers, to me, had more worth
There were no more live ones seen anywhereInspecting myself I did find scratches
and my shirt and socks were torn to ribbon
but the grasshoppers we're dead in batches
Better yet my nerves began to slackenAs years have passed I can now sleep at night
And only in my dreams I live in fright
