letter to the moon.

23 1 3

i wrote a love letter to the moon;
the mailman wouldn't send it.
i'd bought a postage stamp
with a drawing of la luna;
i thought she'd like it.

i stuffed the letter
in an old envelope
with some soil,
some feathers,
dried mint,
a vial of water from the creek,
and moonflower seeds.

i asked the astronaut
to bring it to her;
he said he'd try.

i told her
i have loved you always;
we have known one another all our lives.
at night i dream of kissing a white haired girl
and i think of you.
how beautiful you are
as you sing your swan song.

the astronaut died before
he reached the stars.
that night, i lit a candle
for him as tears ran down
my pale cheeks.
the rain and mist
touched the stained glass windows,
and i knew she mourned for him too.
the waves crashed against
my little island.

i wandered out onto the deck;
breathing in the cold air.
i reached into my pocket
and pulled out the letter i wrote to her.
i threw white and purple orchid petals into the wind,
then the letter;
so the petals
could carry
my love to la luna;
my lover.
