The Waters of Success

Imagine a rich blue, glistening ocean.

Not of water, but your dreams.

And it would have some purple highlights here and there,

like smudges of success.

And you sit on a boat, above the water.

Looking down, you see others like yourself, still trying to swim up for air.

You were like that too, you know. Not that long ago either.

Some of their fingers pierce the surface, and others end up drowning.

And the orange and yellow of the sun stretches greedily throughout the sky,

like it’s trying to touch the edges, even though there aren’t any.

Just take this moment and relax.

Think of all the accomplishments.

Your accomplishments.

There’s other boats in this water, bigger ones. Better ones.

But just think that you’ve done you, and that’s all that matters.

All the emotions, stress, energy. And it was worth it.

The next time you see her, tell her you love her instead of just buying her another margarita.

The next time you get on the computer, get to that novel you’ve been putting off.

The next time you see your parents, thank them for where you are now.

You’ve got nothing to lose; you’ve lost all that already.

Just so you could be here, laughing and enjoying the sunset.

Take a second to be proud of yourself. Arrogant, even.

An eternal bliss that is all yours.

An end that definitely justifies the means.

You’re not swimming for air anymore.
