Light begins to filter into the room, casting a warm glow on the bed. The sounds of spring birds echo softly through the open window, their chirping a gentle reminder that life goes on, even in the face of uncertainty. I turn over to see Rubio lying on his side, watching me with a tender smile. His hand reaches out to cup the side of my face, his touch warm and reassuring. A few strands of my hair fall down, and he gently tucks them behind my ear, his fingers lingering for a moment.
"Did you have a big family," I asked. He shook his head.
"Not really. Just my parents and a younger brother. I haven't seen them in years. What about you," he asks.
"I was an only child, adopted into a Beta family."
He raises an eyebrow at me, chuckling, "That explains why you're so needy. Only children are always bratty."
I laugh for a second before a long silence falls around us.
"I wish we could stay like this forever," I sigh, my voice tinged with both contentment and sorrow. "Thank you for last night. I would request a last meal, but I think I've already gotten my fill."
He laughs hard at my comment, the sound rich and infectious.
"I'd say. I'm exhausted," he chuckles, glancing down at his wrist to check his old-school watch.
"Even your watch is old," I tease, scrunching my nose up at him.
He grins, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's a classic, just like me," he retorts, drawing a laugh from me.
"I can't believe I fucked an old man."
He rolls his eyes playfully, "I just have three hundred and something years of experience. Trust me, I fuck better with age."
I snort, rolling over before sitting up in the bed. My hair falls around my shoulders as I reach down for my dress. I slip it on.
"You're just so full of yourself," I reply, turning to look at him.
"That's ironic." He huffs out, "You seemed pretty full of me all night."
I shake my head at him, a playful smile tugging at my lips.
"Don't you have to get dressed or something?" I retort, trying to break the tension.
He grins, scooting over to the edge of the bed. The sheets bunch up around his lap as he swings his legs over the side. He grabs my hips and pulls me towards him, his touch gentle but firm. He leans in and kisses me, the contact lingering and sweet. After a few moments, he slightly pulls away, resting his forehead against mine. Our loose hair tangles together, creating a soft curtain around us.
"Whatever happens today, please trust me," he whispers, his voice filled with an urgency that makes my heart skip a beat.
I pull back slightly, looking at him with confusion.
"You keep saying that. What's going to happen today?" I ask, stepping away from him to put some distance between us. "Besides me being hung in front of everyone."
He sighs, his expression turning serious, "I can't explain everything right now, but just know that I'm doing everything I can to help you. There are things in motion that you don't know about."
"Rubio, you're scaring me. What are you talking about?"
My confusion deepens, and a knot of worry forms in my stomach. He stands up and takes my hands in his, his grip firm and reassuring.
"I promise you'll understand soon. Just trust me, okay? I need you to trust me."
I search his eyes, looking for answers, but all I find is determination and a hint of something I can't quite place.
