It took more than two hours.
By that time, Rudy was exhausted. Mark tried to help a couple of times, but his older brother kept saying he was too slow, and grabbing the shovel back. Soon, sweat was dripping from Rudy's forehead inspite of the cold, and his breathing was ragged and hoarse. Still, he wouldn't give up. He just kept on shovelling, like a prisoner digging for freedom.
"You'll get your shoes", Rudy said as he dug, "and I'll get enough money to get away from here forever!"
"Away where?"
Rudy didn't share the details of his final destination.
Then, just when it seemed Rudy might be ready to give up the shovel went CLUNK! against something firm and hollow-sounding.
