Gut Feeling

I waited with Mei (my next door neighbour) and little Yuki at their apartment while the cops searched through mine. 2 cops showed up 5 minutes after I dialled 911 and knocked on Mei's door. So far, I haven't heard anything weird except for the cops' interactions. Soon after, they came to Mei's door and told me that nobody's in there and that the place looks untouched and that there were no signs of forced entry.
I followed them inside my apartment and saw to myself that sure enough, the place looks the same just as I had left it. The cops asked me if anything seems to be missing and I told them it didn't look so. They asked me to drop by the station if I find anything missing. I agreed and thanked them politely.
I followed out after them and went up to a worried looking Mei at her doorway and Yuki clutching to her legs.
"Is everything alright? What did they take? What did the police say?" she asked, as I knelt down to touch Yuki's cheeks.
"Everything's fine, Mei. Thanks for letting me in, and I'm so sorry that all of this woke Yuki up." I apologised.
"No, of course! It's fine. Are you sure nothing's stolen?"
"Yeah, everything's just as I had left it. I'm gonna go in now, my food's cold and I'm so tired" I replied with a smile.
"Yes yes, eat something and rest. Don't hesitate to knock or give me a call if you need anything, ok." Mei said as she picked Yuki up and got ready to close her door.
"Sure. Have a good night you guys. And sorry, again. Bye Yuki!"
Yuki waved bye at me as Mei closed the door with a goodnight. I turned around and stopped at my doorway. I may have been acting all fine but inside I was terrified. I hesitated before I stepped inside and locked the door behind me. I started looking around the apartment for any clues as to who might have broken in. After an hour of going through everything and finding nothing missing or out of place, I finally started doubting whether I really forgot to lock the door this morning.
But that's just not me. I don't forget to lock the doors. Just as how I never forget to turn the stove off or turn the TV off or even the lights and the fans. Its like a routine, which I have been especially careful of ever since I moved and started to live alone. When I first moved in here, my next door neighbour was the landlord's creepy, junky nephew. I had gotten extra careful since I find him loitering around my door a lot when I get home. He'd either be high, or going from withdrawal but his uncle refused to believe that he was an addict until the cops picked him up on heroin dealing charges 7 months ago. I was so happy when Mei and Yuki moved in soon after, but I was still as anal as ever.
The scary thing is, the fact that I know I locked the door and someone had been in here but had left without robbing me of anything, means that robbing me wasn't their intention. The homeless man and his words kept coming back to me ever since I called the cops and I had this strange feeling in my stomach that this was somehow connected to that.
But thats weird right? I mean what are the chances.
I don't know, I'm actually a quite strong believer in chance. I didn't wanna tell the cops about any of my suspicions because I had no proof of anything. It's all kind of in my head, quite possibly. I decided that I had to do something, at least try and look for that man to find out what he was talking about.
I flopped down on the couch after eating my food and having showered very cautiously with an ear out for any noises. I took my phone out and saw that it was 12.30 am. I usually sleep around 2 and tomorrow's my off day from work, so I decided to read a little. I picked up a book from the coffee table and started to read but I guess I was more tired than I had realised because two pages in, and I was out.
