i squealed as the light flashed around me one more time until it disappeared, throwing me forward onto the asphault. i coughed and sputtered a couple of times, trying to catch my breath before looking up to actually see where i was. i slowly got up off of the ground and brushed off my clothes, glancing around to see that i was behind a row of tight-knit buildings. i followed the brick wall until it opened up to the sidewalk and watched in awe as the cars sped along the left side of the road, and people walked along the street and rode bicycles. i had never seen anything like this before.

i watched the people as they pushed past me, trying to decide what to do next. i hadn't really thought of that. what was my plan here? i didn't know where i was going or what to do; i didn't even know anybody. and what about food? what did they eat here? when were rations delivered?

i studied the people speeding past me, deciding that blending in here was probably my best option for now. so i followed a group of people along the side of the road for awhile until two of the streets came together and everyone around me stopped. i bumped into the back of someone in front of me and the woman glared back at me before she turned back around to face forward once again.

i scolded myself, staring down at the ground attempting to avoid all eye contact with those others around me: that was until i noticed the string on my footwear was no longer tied as it was before. i groaned as i bent down to tie it once again, trying to remember how it had gone again. was it the ears first? No, that wasn't it... it was the over and under first, that was right!

i gave myself a mental pat on the back when i successfully tied the string back into its rightful place. at least until i realized that the group of people i was supposed to be blending in with had already crossed the street in front of me. i gasped and quickly made my way towards them.

but that, my friend, was my first mistake.
