Saphira
Last class. Gym. Great. And to make things worse I have Andrew in my class along with the other barbies. He’s wearing a white shirt that defines his broad shoulders and muscular stomach with gray Nike shorts that make his butt look good. Today we are playing a stupid game that we always play when the gm teachers don’t feel like doing anything. Andrew is on my team and he immediately comes over to me. Whoa, what is happening? Why is he coming over to me? Little, boring me?
“What are you doing?”
“Coming over to talk to my favorite girl.”
What? He must be joking because that is impossible. Just last period he had all those girls over him and probably didn’t even notice me! I’m not special and I’m definitely not a favorite. But by his expression he was dead serious. Wow.
The game starts and nothing exciting happens. As usual. During the game I started a conversation with him. Just to be nice. And I wanted to hear his sexy, husky voice.
To my surprise he asks me to show him around town. I’m surprised he hasn’t already asked one of the barbies. I really would want to go, but I have to do the dishes and my other chorus. But when he says he’s gonna starve, I mine as well show him around. There’s nothing really to see but more time with him, I’m in. I am so happy and I’m smiling like an idiot. He’s smiling too so that’s good. My parents will understand. This is the first boy I’ve shown an interest in.
After gym I head to my locker and get my stuff. We didn’t really plan anything except for where doing it today after school. Like how were gonna meet or if were using a car or walking. Stuck in my head, when I close my locker, I scream. Andrew is right there next to my locker. How did he know where my locker was?
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” I could tell he wasn’t serious because he had a smile on his face.
Out of breath from almost having a heart attack I say “It’s okay. I was just lost in my thoughts.” I end with a smile since he was sooo concerned.
He leads the way from my locker to the doors that lead to the student parking lot. We head to a large truck with huge tires. It’s black and shinny, and has two shinny smoke stacks.
“This is your truck?”
“Yeah, why do you ask?”
“It’s just that I don’t know if I can get into it.”
He laughs at me. “I’ll help you, don’t you worry.”
He opens the door for me and asks if he can help me up. The idea of his hands on me is a wonderful thought, but the actually idea of his hands actually on me is too much to bear.
“Yeah, its fine. I got to get in here somehow.”
He picks me up and gently puts me in the truck, shuts the door and walks over to his side. I notice that all my classmates are looking at us. Probably because I’ve never done this before, with a guy. Ha-ha, bet you know they don’t think I’m a lesbian anymore. He starts up the truck and country music blares through the speakers. He is quick to turn down the music and he mumbles a “sorry” and were off. I can feel the purring of his truck beneath me as he drives around town. I do my best to explain the directions where the best store is to get food, clothes, gas, and furniture for a house. It’s around seven when were finished with the tour.
“Do you know a good restaurant where we can get some dinner?”
I smiled. “Of course I do. Turn right at the next intersection.”
“Thank you, for showing me around. I had fun.”
“I had fun too.” We both smile at each other like stupid love struck fools. Except, we aren’t in love or anything.
“So, how was your life back in New York?”
“Well, let’s just say I was living the ‘life’.”
“If you were living the ‘life’ then why did you move to this crappy town?”
“Um…”
“I’m sorry, you don’t have to tell me.”
“Maybe when were closer, then I’ll tell you everything.” Closer? So he wants this friendship to be long lasting. Good, because I do too. It would be nice to have a guy friend. Maybe even a boyfriend. We arrived at the restaurant that I love. It has great burgers and fries.
Above us the door bell rings like every other day I come in. Michelle the waitress that normally serves me shows us to our seats, well I should say where I always sit. Once seated, I look around. There is only one other person here, and the old man is always here, like me. Every time I come here, he is always here, drinking coffee and reading the newspaper.
The diner has a homey feel to it. The walls are painted a light blue, with several tables and booths including a reading section. The waitresses are always friendly to everyone that comes in. Andrew is looking around too, checking everything out. The diner is not small but it’s not huge either. It’s just perfect.
“Good evening Saphira. Pepsi like normal? “
Yes please.”Andrew looks at me. I just smile.
“And what would you like to drink young man?”
“I’ll just have an iced tea.”
“I’ll be right back with your drinks.”
As she walks away Andrew turns to me.
“Come here often?”
“I like their burgers.” I add a sly smile.
“Well, I guess I know what to order and where to find you.” He smiles.
“Their burgers are amazing!! And you probably will fine me here if I’m not at home.”
I saw Michelle coming over with our drinks.
“Are you guys ready to order? Well I know you are, Saphira, but how about the young prince charming?”
“I’ll have the same as her.” He flashes her his charming smile.
She didn’t have to write down our orders because she knew what I wanted, how I wanted it. That and there was no one here.
“So how long have you lived here?” he asks with wonder in his eyes.
“I’ve so far lived here my whole life butt I plan on moving right after high school is over.”
“Why, don’t you like it here? It’s a nice, small town.”
“I want to get out of this town. I want to see the world. Go search for stuff.”
“And what would that be?”
“I was adopted…” I never wanted to tell Andrew that I was adopted. Nobody from school knows I was adopted and I don’t want him to know. I don’t want anybodies pity or anything.
“So you want to go search for your parents and know who you are?” I was not expecting that answer at all. I was expecting a I’m sorry, or that horrible, not that.
“Yeah I do.”
Before he could answer Michelle comes over and sets our food down in front of us.
“Anything else I can get you?”
“No Michelle, I think were good.” I smile at her as she leaves alone with our food.
Andrew takes a huge bite of his food and after two chews he’s groaning with pleasure.
“I take it you like it?” Since he has his mouth full of food he just nods his head with enthusiasm. I take a bite from my burger and I close my eyes and groan with pleasure like I always do. I can never get tired of these burgers. When I open my eyes Andrew is looking at me with desire swirling in his eyes. Caught, he goes back at eating his food.
