Another boring day at the office.  I looked at my watch and, when I saw the time, I groaned and rested my head on my desk.  This day needs to end.  I looked around my cubicle, hoping for something to occupy my attention for the last thirty minutes before I was done for the day.  It was a very small cubicle in the back of the room in the basement of the office building.  They must really hate me if they put me down here.  I do what everybody else does and work just as hard.

The injustice.  Either way, best not to think about it now.  The day is nearly done and then I will get to unwind and relax like I deserve.

I looked at my watch again and perked up a little.  Just a bit more before I’m out of this place.  Maybe I’ll finally go to that bar with Ed today.  He’s been after me to go with him for some time and maybe it will get him off my case.  Regardless, I think I deserve a little relaxation with friends after today.

Again, I looked at my watch and saw that, at long last, it was time for me to leave.  I quickly got up, gathered my things and began to exit my cubicle when I heard footsteps coming my direction.  Groaning silently to myself, I stopped and turned towards the footsteps.  It was Lenny, my boss.

“Jacob, we need those forms filled by tomorrow.  Can you do that?”

I hesitated a bit but then said, “Sure.  They’ll be ready.”

“Terrific, see you tomorrow!” Lenny replied as he turned to leave.

My once happy demeanor fell since I knew I could never get those forms done by tomorrow unless I worked on them all night.  I guess my night of fun and relaxation will have to wait.

As I exited the office building, my phone rang.  I stopped to see who was calling and saw that it was Ed.  Sighing, I answered.  “Hey, Ed.  How’s it going?”

“Hey, man, up for that bar tonight?  I know it is a work day tomorrow but they have half off pints all night tonight.”

I paused.  Before he called, I had every intention of telling him I couldn’t make it tonight because of work but half off pints was nothing to sneeze at.  “Yeah, man, let’s do it.”

“Awesome!  I’ll meet you there around eight.  That’s when the deal starts.”

Before I could respond, Ed hung up and I realized what I just did.  Now there is no way I will be able to finish those forms in time for tomorrow.  Maybe I should call back and cancel?  No, I need this night.

Having decided what to do, I walked quickly to my car so I could drive home to get ready for the night.
