Chapter 1.1: The Watcher

What was that name again?  I remember it came to me as I died.  Its very nature and definition being that of not only death itself but pure evil still shook me to the core.  But what was it and where was I?  I’m sure it doesn’t matter now because I know I am dead.  I just wish I had ended up in a better place.  What was that name?  Whoever it was played a major role in wherever I am now.  But what is this place?

Stopping my fractured thoughts, I looked around and found that I was in a dark, stony place.  Around me was a moat of magma keeping me separated from the rest of wherever I was.  Despite the urgent feeling in my gut telling me I needed to move from my current location, I found that I was physically incapable of moving as if I was somehow incapable of helping myself in any way.  This was not good and brought me back into my fractured and seemingly senseless musings as to why I was here and as to where exactly “here” was.  That name I heard before I died kept coming back into my thoughts, too.  I just couldn’t remember what it was despite my best efforts.  As if remembering it could somehow free me from my helpless state.

What hell is this?  I froze.  Was this hell?  I did remember that name being connected in some way to evil and death, could I have been drawn to this place through whoever held that name?

Despite these thoughts, I somehow knew this was not hell, nor anywhere close.  Now that I stopped and calmed my thoughts, I could feel this great hope swelling inside of me.  Yes, I remembered reading of a place like this before; a place almost of healing until the final goal.  Purgatory, was that the name?  Yes, that was it.  I must be there!  At least I hope I am.  Where else could this hope come from as I sit immobile, trapped on an island of rock?  For all intents and purposes, this should be a great cause for fear and hopelessness.  Yes, this must be that place.  Purgatory, yes, let’s go with that.
