The Hands of Happiness

I placed my happiness into your hands,

and as I stood there watching your arms grow heavy, I worried

that it might not last long before it's shattered.

Then I took it back from you,

so that your arms were free now to embrace me if you wished,

so that your lips were free now to speak your own truth

and to laugh and sing softly into my ear rather than talk

about the reasons why your arms were heavy.

I went on planting kisses of sunny skies and opened eyes of immense depths

and hugged you back with my whole being,

embracing sky and earth and light inside your heart.
