“I don’t get it, mama.” Jane had said to her mother as she stood in front of her, slightly playing with the stuffed dog in her hands. Riley smiled widely at her daughter and reached over; pushing her daughter’s hair behind her ear.
“What is it that you don’t get?” She softly asked as she leaned back in the waiting room chair. Jane sighed and looked up at her mother, her hazel eyes being full of curiosity and confusion. The little girl left her mouth open a little bit, trying to think on how to word her sentence. Sure, Jane is four years old, but a clever one.
“How the baby is in your tummy…” She finally said after a second of thought. “How is the baby in your tummy if it comes out one day? How does it do that?” Curiosity was in her voice and it also showed in her face. An eye brow was raised and her head was tilted to the side like a confused puppy, her long, light brown hair falling towards the side. Riley smiled widely at her daughter and softly explained,
“In just four months, Mommy will come back here again with Daddy, and you will be with Uncle Kendall. Then the doctor will get the baby for us.”
“But how?” Jane questioned, just to then have her father reply,
“Jane, don’t you remember that curiosity killed the cat?” Jane looked at her father, raising her right eye brow high up at him.
“But doesn’t satiaction bring it back?” James chuckled a bit at his daughter, lifting her up and holding her close to him.
“Who taught you that?” He asked his daughter all in a joking and teasing tone. Jane gave a “hmmm” as she pretended to think, then replied,
“Uncle Kendall because he telled me it was bad to think the kitty cat died by curiosity!” Riley smiled widely at her daughter and husband as they spoke, being filled with happiness by seeing them together again and she knew James felt the same way. Having the full family meant absolutely everything to both of them.
“Riley Maslow?” A nurse had called just a few moments later. Riley looked over at where she heard her and then looked back at James.
“Guess I’ll be back. Still want the baby gender to be put in the envelope and given to Ariana?” Riley had asked as she had gotten up from the chair. James nodded.
“Of course.” He replied to her, giving a smile.
------Three weeks later------
Ariana squealed, nearly running to the kitchen table with a small pink bag in her hand. It was the baby shower of the Maslow baby and everybody except Riley, James, little Jane, and a few family members knew what they were having. However, they weren’t allowed to open a single gift from anybody until they opened Ariana’s first, as hers was the gender reveal.
“Okay, are you ready? Because I’m ready and you really need to know what you are going to have because like…” Ariana stopped short and squealed again, nearly jumping up and down as she handed the bag to her friend. “Here! Open it!” Ariana smiled widely, trying to calm herself down, but she was a bit too hyped to consider it. Ariana was a younger friend to James and Riley, meaning she is only twenty years old young. So her excitableness was completely understandable.
Riley looked at James, like asking if he was ready. He stood behind the chair his wife sat in, their daughter standing beside her mother since she couldn’t really sit well in her lap. James leaned his head down, planting a kiss on her forehead. “Go ahead.” He softly spoke to her. Riley smiled widely and looked at the bag. It was a light pink, but on the inside were blue papers. What was she carrying? Riley took a random nervous breath, and rather quickly took the blue papers out of the bag, throwing them off onto the table. She picked up the card that was upside down in the bag and turned it over, seeing neatly written in cursive, “Mommy, I am a girl!” Riley gave an excited squealish scream, jumping up from the chair and dropped the card, her eyes tearing up with happiness as she clamped a hand over her mouth.
To be completely honest, Riley had no idea how to react except for the happiness she is having now. James chuckled a bit at his wife and softly asked,
“Well?” As he didn’t get the chance to read the card. Riley shook her head, not being able to form words. She just picked up the card that landed on the table and handed it to James, keeping her hand over her mouth as she watched him read the card. Very quickly his perfectly calm expression turned into a wide smile and his arm found its way around Riley’s waist rather soon. He gently took her hand away from her mouth and softly whispered,
“Another daughter. Another little baby girl.” He smiled widely at his wife, cupping her face in his hands as he kissed her, the room being filled with an “awe” from all the friends and family that were there. The newest Maslow addition will be another baby girl, and nothing could make either one of the parents happier. Personally James was hoping for a son this time, somebody he could teach Football to or take to baseball games. But he was happy with the idea of another little girl! Over joyed, even.
But if only he knew the happiness he felt now would be replaced with pain in just a few months.
