I woke to see a couple of people standing over me. A light was shone into my eyes, something was said. It was too loud. My head was pounding. My entire body ached. I just wanted it to stop. I closed my eyes tightly and let the slender fingers of unconsciousness envelope me.

I remember waking up a few times after that, sometimes there were nurses, sometimes it was just my mom, and once there was a strange girl, she looked to be about my age. She had been holding flowers.

It was a few days before I gained full consciousness and even more until I was able to eat without much help.

I was broken.

The morning of the crash my sister had been driving me to school, it was a normal morning, we had woke up around 7:00 and we were ready to go by 7:45. Personally I was ready at 7:15, but my two sisters always take forever to get ready. We were on our way to school after my sister had gotten gas. My stepdad had let her drive his truck that morning, which was unusual as it's his baby. Right before the crash my older sister had been turned around yelling at my little sister, Mandy. She wasn't looking as we drove up to a blind corner, I told her to slow down, but she hardly listened. She turned back around a few seconds before the crash. Kayla and I were mostly okay, the airbags saved us, we just had some bruises. Mandy though, she had fractured her right cheekbone.

As Kayla called 911 and tended to Mandy, I got out to check on the people in the other car, which looked pretty bad, it had been pushed back a couple of feet after we collided with it. The back half of the right side was crushed, I hoped that no one had been in the backseat. I didn't get my wish, I began to panic the second I saw blood, it was on the cracked window. I ran to the other side of the car and opened the door. It seemed that the older boy and the girl who looked to be about 13 were okay, finally coming to and realizing what had happened, but the girl in the backseat was sprawled out sideways. Blood was pouring from her face, it looked so fake in the morning light. I wished all of this was fake. Her hair was matted with a little bit of blood, her ribs didn't look quite right. Her arm was at a weird angle. I wasn't sure if she was breathing. I was scared to touch her.

"KAYLA!" I screamed, she was still on the phone with the dispatcher. She ran over, hearing the tone of my voice, knowing that it was serious. By now, the other two were out of the car, the boy was also on the phone. Kayla hurriedly told the dispatcher about what had happened.

Seven minutes later there were two ambulances, a couple of police, and a tow truck pulling up to the scene. Mandy and I went with one ambulance and the older boy and the broken girl who's name I'd learnt was Kiera took the other. Kayla told the police what had happened, she was crying. She then offered to take the other girl to the hospital in the truck, which despite the crash, still worked. I was panicking, Mandy tried to calm me down, but it wasn't really working. One of the paramedics gave me an ice pack for my face and put a couple of band-aids over the cuts. I asked if the other girl would be okay. The paramedic smiled reassuringly, I wasn't reassured. I remembered Kiera from school. She was a year older than me. I prayed for her.
