My entire body froze, my eyes locked on the barrel of the gun. At the other end of the gun was a girl, from what I could tell in the darkness. She had a wicked smirk on her face, her dark eyes sparkling in the little light that flooded into the building. I heard the clicks of about four other guns, no doubt aimed at the two of us.
Charles didn't move a muscle, his eyes traveling around the room, obviously trying to think of something that'd get him out of this situation unharmed.
"What do we have here? A wolf and a bloodsucker?"
The girl spoke with an amused tone, her finger flexing over the trigger slightly. I could tell what was running through her mind, based on the smile on her face. She was thinking about how lucky they were that two supernatural creatures, who should've been able to detect them, walked right in without a second thought. It would've been hilarious if I had been in her position, but I wasn't in her position.
Charles shifted slightly, adjusting me on his shoulder, which caused the people in the station to point their weapons right at him, not too concerned about me considering I was tied up.
"Gentlemen, and my lady, let's not be rash about this. Maybe we can come to an agreement?"
Charles smooth voice echoed out through the area, one of his powers showing. He was able to persuade almost anyone, unless they had an extremely strong will. But I could tell these people didn't care. They wanted something, and they planned to get it.
"Agreement, huh? That's a first."
The woman spoke with thick sarcasm, now aiming her gun right at Charles chest.
"How about you drop the dog, and we'll kill you."
It was obvious she wasn't going to accept any other answer. I had no idea what they planned to do with me, but I could assume that it wouldn't be good.
Kayla's POV
Me and Aria followed the scent of blood, which was getting weaker and weaker the longer we ran. It was beginning to dry, and if it did before we could catch up to Zane's scent then we wouldn't be able to find him. The bond was growing weaker as well, so I'd have to rely on it as a last resort.
We ran for about an hour before we came upon the scent of gunpowder and blood. We glanced at each other, exchanging worried glances before we charged for what looked like an old train station. It was pitch black inside, but the small amount of light showed more than what either of us had been expecting to see.
Bullets littered the ground, ranging from shot gun shells to rifle shells. Blood was splattered all over the room, the smell of it clogging our noses, making us gag. Our eyes slowly adjusted to the dim light, and we started to see more and more. There were boot prints in the blood, ranging between sizes, though that mattered little to us. What caught our attention was what looked like a body, leaned against the wall near the door. It wasn't moving, and reeked like the blood throughout the room. We moved closer, shock hitting us as we saw who it was.
Charles. He was riddled with bullet holes, so many that one couldn't even begin to count them. Even for the undead he looked absolutely terrible. A sound came from him, a low moan, that cause the both of us to jump back in utter surprise. He was still alive, even after being shot over and over. Me and Aria looked at each other, clearly thinking the same thing. How was he still alive?
Then another thought hit me, a thought that caused nothing but pure panic to run through me. I shifted human, my wolf's eyes locked on him. If he was alive, then he could answer my questions.
"Where is Zane?!"
I looked around the room, praying to whatever higher being is up there that I didn't find Zane's body in the same state. It may be surprising, but a wolf couldn't handle taking so many bullets. Zane would've been gone after the first few.
My search of the room came up empty, the only things in here were the bullets, blood, and Charles. I turned to Charles, a deadly glare in my eyes.
"Tell me. Where. Is. My. Mate."
My voice was calm, though the alpha tone was coming through without me meaning to make it happen. It was so powerful that Aria couldn't help but drop into a submissive position instantly, almost trembling from the power of it. I'd hate myself for doing that to her later, but right now my focus was on getting information out of the dying creature in front of me. He looked up at me, and had the audacity to flash his grin at me.
"If I knew, don't you think I'd have told you? Smell the air. Apart from the blood, the scents will tell you who has him."
He wasn't answering my question straight on, and it was making me angry, angrier than I had been before. It was almost to the point that my wolf was wanting to force a shift, which I've only experienced once before and it wasn't something I wanted to experience again.
I motioned to Aria to sniff the air, too angry to focus on anything other than Charles. She did as I commanded, knowing it was best if she didn't make anything any worse. It took her a moment, but I could tell she had the scent when she hesitated, making me want to know even more.
"Hunters..."
She muttered, averting her gaze. I froze, a wave of emotions rushing through my body. I wanted to collapse and cry out, but at the same time I wanted to go on a rampage, kill anything in my path. I ended up sinking to my knees, unable to process what I was feeling anymore. Hunters were the worst kinds of people. And the last group of people I would ever want Zane to get captured by.
They used wolves, for training purposes, dog fighting, you name it and they probably do it. If they had a hold of Zane, which I was positive they did by now, there'd be no telling what he was going through right now.
"How long have they had him?!"
I spoke with a sense of urgency in my voice, wanting Charles to answer without any riddles. I just wanted a straight answer from him, and if he was smart, he'd give me what I wanted.
"I'd say about three hours... Give or take... You girls move rather slow.."
He coughed, laughing at the same time. This was a game to him, a sick game. He knew there wasn't much we could do to him cause he was dying anyway. I snarled, cursing myself for not moving faster. If I had been faster then maybe, just maybe, I could've saved Zane. I could've prevented this entire mess and we would've been back to normal. Or somewhat normal.
"Don't blame yourself, Kayla. You can't forget that he's a vampire, able to move at a much greater speed than you or I. We were moving much faster than any normal wolf, so we were doing the best we could."
Aria spoke, having shifted human as well. She moved closer to me, putting a hand on my shoulder. I knew she was right, but I still couldn't stop blaming myself for not moving faster. Surely there was something I could've done.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by a gentle squeeze on my shoulder, my eyes meeting Aria's.
"Everything will turn out ok in the end. We will get Zane back, we just have to be patient. We'll find him and bring him home, I promise."
She spoke soothingly, calming the thoughts running through my mind. I nodded, pushing myself back to my feet. I wanted to find Zane sooner rather than later, especially if him being taken by hunters was true. I don't even want to know what he's going through, and even if i wanted to, I couldn't know. He was blocking any pain he was feeling, and the bond was steadily growing weaker.
We had to find him soon, before it's too late.
Hey guys! Happy Holidays! As promised, I'm sending out this new chapter as a gift to you guys. I'm not going to add any excuses as to why I haven't been writing, I'm just being crappy at keeping my story updated and I'm sorry about it. I do intend to start updating at a much faster pace, though if I do slow down on updates then feel free to bug me until I update again. Haply holidays! Have a good day!
