I sighed in relief as I finally stripped myself of my clothes. Being the only girl on the basketball team was rough, but I liked it. I gathered night clothes and a towel as I headed towards my bathroom. Suddenly, my phone rang. I ran over to my phone, holding my towel tightly. 'Austin' it read. I sighed in frustration. Sure, he was my best friend and all, but he knows how tired I am after games. I picked up the phone, and answered,
"What?" I said, frustrated.
"Darien, I know you are gross and sweaty, but I need your help!"
Wow, thanks Austin.
"What do you need help with?" I asked, trying to sound less annoyed.
"Look, I can't say much, but my girlfriend broke up with me, and I need you to help me." He said, frantically.
"Look, Austin, I know you are upset, but I can't help you-"
He cut me off, "NO, I just need you to help. Please?"
I sighed in frustration, "Fine."
"Great, I'll tell you the details tomorrow! Thanks!"
I was going to say something, but he hung up right after that.
I didn't know who his girlfriend, well, now ex girlfriend was, he was really secretive about her. She must be a bitch to break up with my best friend like that. I stopped thinking about it, and walked into my bathroom, placing my clothes and towel on the counter. I played Panic! At The Disco and stepped into the shower, washing my short hair thoroughly, along with my body. I then started to think about the basketball game.
----------
"I'm open!" I yelled, running towards the basketball goal, my hands raised high. Jackson, who currently had the ball, threw the basketball to me.Catch it..
Catch it..
Catch it!
I caught it!
I squatted, preparing to shoot. I shot the ball, and was met with frustration. The ball hit the rim. I almost cursed aloud, kicking the ground.
This continued throughout the whole game, our team failing miserably. The game ended 12-46. I felt at fault, even though I did make one shot. Everyone started walking out, the basketball team along with the cheerleaders staying inside, talking. I looked over to the cheerleaders, a brown haired girl looking at me, a hand over her mouth as she was talking to another girl, who was also looking at me. I could tell they were gossiping. I marched over to them, "Do you want to say that to my face?" I asked, my words dripping with attitude. The brown haired girl walked up to me, bringing a finger to my upper chest and said,
"You are the reason our team lost. Ever since the coach let you on the team, we have sucked. Are you wanting that much attention? To have the title 'First Ever Girl On The Basketball Team'?" I was shocked, I didn't think she would actually say that to my face. I hid my insecurities and pushed her back,
"Maybe if you cheered better, our team wouldn't suck. You can't blame it all on one person. I even got us points!" I said back to her, standing straight, to seem taller, even though she was shorter than me already.
"Uh, I cheer great, thank you very much." She pushed me back, hard, but I didn't fall over.
"You know only attention whores join the cheer team." I said to her, raising my voice. Her face changed drastically, and she slapped me across the face.
"Do not ever talk shit about my cheer team." I was going to say something, but another cheerleader called out, "Abby! Let's go!" She started to walk away, but then said, "Oh, and also, try not to rub off on your team and make them all failures too." Then, she walked off with her cheer squad. In a way, I wanted to take back everything I said, but she shouldn't have been gossiping about me anyway. That bitch. One day she will see what happens when you are a bitch to everyone.
----------
I rinsed the conditioner out of my hair, and started to cry. Was I really ruining the team? Should I quit? I stepped out of the shower and dried myself, and turned off the music I forgot about on my phone. I turned off the light and shut the door. As I slipped on my clothes, I sighed and plugged up my phone. Then, I got under the covers and curled into myself, crying myself to sleep.
----------
"You want me to what?" I asked, panicking.
"I just want you to befriend my ex girlfriend and see if she talks about me." Austin said, obviously really wanting my help.
"You know what, fine. Who is she?"
"She's a cheerleader so you must know her through basketball." He replied, and I got frustrated.
"No, Austin, what's her name?""Abigail McKinney. She goes by Abby."
Shit.
