The rogues didn't understand their clearence level. Well, except Natasha. They've just always been allowed to go everywhere until Civil War. However, when they wanted to go to a higher floor, FRIDAY said that they didn't have a high enough clearence level. So what clearence level were they?
"Friday, what clearence level are we?" Clint finally asked.
"Level 7." FRIDAY answered.
"Huh, ok, can't be too far from the highest level." Clint mumbled. Suddenly, the elevator dinged, announcing someone's arrival. And then Peter walked in. It looked like he didn't see the others, yet, as he was focused on scanning some sort of paper. He also had a back pack, so he probably just came from school.
"Hey, kid." Natasha said, trying not to sound too intimidating. Peter looked up, not surprised in the least, like he knew they were there. Maybe FRIDAY told him.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Romanoff." Peter greeted with a tired smile. And that's when she noticed the bruise on his cheek. Looked like someone punched him. School bully? Some robber?
"Hey, what happened?" Clint asked.
"Oh, I ran into a door this morning, but I'll be fine." Peter reassured.
"That wasn't caused by a door." Bucky stated, crossing his arms. Peter then started to look panicked.
"I have to go do homework, so you probably won't see me for a while. Bye." He quickly said and ran out of the room. Weird.
Five hours later, Peter came back into the room with five pieces of paper in hand, heading towards the private elevator. Clint thought it'd be funny to see him go in only to realize he couldn't, because not even they could go in that elevator. Only family and very close friends could. And an intern wouldn't be an exception. Personal or not. Well, it was funny until he realized that the kid hdn't come out of the elevator, meaning it worked for him. What the heck?!
"Hey, could you keep away from the elevator? Or more specifically, the kid?!" Tony said, suddenly walking in.
"Who is that kid, Tony?! Why does it seem like he has higher clearence than us?!" Clint asked, annoyed. However, he had to eat his words the next moment when he saw Tony's glare.
"You have no right to ask that. And yes, he does have higher clearence because he's much more trustworthy than any of you combined." Tony growled.
"Tony, no offense to the kid, but I'm pretty sure we're more trustworthy than him." Steve argued, but stopped when the glare went towards him.
"Oh really Mr. 'keep the secret that my friend's parents were murdered by the person living in his house!' You have no right to argue with me about how trustworthy you are!" Tony yelled, then walked in the elevator before anyone could respond, he did, however, say,
"Stay away from Peter." While glaring at them as if they were the cause of all his problems. As the elevator left, the avengers looked at one another, and thought the same thing. They had to find out who that kid was.
Natasha found Peter on their floor an hour later in front of a computer, looking focused. She snuck behind him when he said,
"Привет, госпожа Романов." Natasha was shocked, but replied with,
"Привет, мистер Паркер." Peter wasn't surprised that she knew his last name. She was the Black Widow after all.
"Is there something you wanted or...?" Peter asked, confused as to why she tried to sneak up on him.
"I just wanted to know who could live up to Tony's standards for a personal intern." Natasha stated.
"Oh, well, I don't know. He didn't really tell me why he kept me around." Peter said.
"Well then, if your his intern, then why were you watching TV with him the other day?" Natasha asked, trying to not sound suspicious.
"It's sort of become something normal. He offered to watch a movie with him since I was done with work early and we just started doing that everyday. Eventually, Rhodey started joining, then even Pepper and Happy when they could." Peter smiled at the memory.
"But, there was something I've always wanted to ask an avenger, and I was too embarrassed to ask Mr. Stark." Peter said and Natasha nodded for him to go on.
"Have you ever been scared for the world to know you?" He asked, and Natasha blinked. No one has ever asked her that. She was expecting the usual questions. How does it feel to be an avenger? How did you all feel about each other? How does it feel to save lives. That kind of thing. Natasha quickly hid her shock, and decided to answer truthfully, knowing this kid was no threat.
"Yes. I was worried that any old enemies would see me or of people making false claims, the attention. But I knew I wouldn't be alone. And there wasn't really anyone I got close to enough to be put in danger." Natasha answered, and before she knew it, she and Peter were having a long conversation. It was a pleasant one, and once they were done, Natasha knew why Tony kept him around.
Clint found him next, and also tried to sneak up on him.
"Hi." Peter greeted as he turned around and Clint jumped and screamed. Peter looked at him confused, and Clint akwardly cleared his throat and replied,
"Hey uh, what-watcha working on, kiddo?" Peter rose his eyebrow in question but answered anyway.
"Just some prototype I was working on in the lab." Clint looked over his shoulder, and sure enough, there was a blue print.
"Really, did everyone else like it?" Clint asked and Peter was confused.
"Uh, everyone else?"
"You know, the other interns. Surely they saw it in the lab."
"Uh, the only other one that's ever in the lab is Mr. Stark." Peter replied, confused.
"Wait, you work in Tony's lab?!" Clint yelled in realization and Peter jumped, startled.
"Um, yes?" Peter said, really confused. Now Clint knew something was up. Even to a personal intern, Tony never lets anyone except people he trusts to go in his lab for more than one visit. Even the avengers never got to go in there. Eventually, Clint just walked away, leaving a confused Peter. The kid just decided to go back to work, still confused. After an hour, everyone walked in the kitchen to see Peter still working. Steve was about to go talk to him when a voice interrupted from the other side of the room.
"Alright, kid. Come on, everyone's waiting." Tony said, eyeing the other avengers.
"Alright." Peter responded and followed him to the elevator. Where were they going? Upstairs, Peter walked in the dining room to see Pepper, Happy, and Rhodey. There was a plate of food in front of each of them, while two others sat next to each other with no one there. Peter and Tony sat at those spots, and dinner began. Tony was happy with how his life was going, and looked around the table. Peter, Pepper, Rhodey, and Happy, the only people who have stuck by him no matter what, his family. And he'd protect it, even from the Earth's mightest heros.
