I had another nightmare about how all this started. I've been having them for some time now. They never stop coming back.
I had this friend. Mika, was her name. She was like a sister to me, always there for me when others weren't. She knew everything about me, and still excepted me. We were together when hell broke loose.
"So what color do you think I should get?" Mika asked me. I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at her. She was holding two different colored lipsticks. Dark red and light pink. She always had trouble choosing between those two colors.
"Why don't you get both?" I asked annoyed.
She frowned at me and said, "Sorry for wanting your opinion."
I sighed and looked away. "No don't apologize, it's just, my mind has been somewhere else lately."
She smiled. "I wasn't apologizing, I was just trying to get you to feel bad. And it worked!" She shouted enthusiastically. I shushed her as we got weird looks from everyone around us. That was Mika, always drawing attention. "I'll just get both, like you said." She then whispered to me with a goofy smirk on her face.
I just smiled at her and shook my head. Little did I know then, that would be the last truly happy smile I would have. We began walking through the rest of the store, talking about the latest guy she thought was cute, when some man fell to the floor coughing up blood.
I jumped back and pulled Mika with me. I grabbed her hand and started running to the back of the store. I pulled her most of the way to the weapons area. Everyone had run to the front of the store to try to help the man, so no one was back here by the weapons.
"We have to help him!" Mika shouted, this time out of panic. I looked at her then slammed my elbow through the glass on the counter by the knifes. "What are you doing?" She asked still panicking.
I pulled out three long, sharp knives and held out my hand for her to take one. She hesitated. "You know my past, Mika, trust me." I told her. She took the knife I held out to her and I held the other two, one in each hand.
"I've never used one of these before, never even held one." She said nervously.
"Well you're about to." I told her.
"How do you know what's going on?" She asked.
I thought for a second on how to answer her question in a way she would understand. "I feel it. I feel how the atmosphere got tenser, how the earth shifted. I feel it all the time." She nodded at me but our attention was taken off that topic when people started screaming and running towards the back of the store.
"Come on." I told her and ran out of the back door with her close behind. We ran all the way to my car and got in. I started it and drove off. I started running that day, and I've been running ever since.
~Three days after the first occurrence~
For three days we had been on the move. We never stayed in one place to long. If you are smart you don't. However on that day, the third day after it all started, was the day I would change. That was the day I would become who I am now. I didn't know this at the time of course. I didn't know that was the day I would lose the person that kept me sane.
We had been walking for quite some time given that my car ran out of gas, and there wasn't a gas station anywhere in sight. I was doing fine, but I could tell Mika was getting tired.
"Can't we stop yet?" Mika asked.
"Do you see anywhere for us to stop?" There was nothing but woods all around us. We had been taking back roads in hopes that they would be safer.
