-You've heard the expression the eyes are the window to the soul, but for you this expression is much more literal. Every time you look into someone's eyes, their eyes change color depending on their mood. You've seen dark eyes, like maybe a purple or even a grey; this usually this means they're in a bad mood, but one day you see someone with pure black eyes.-
Evan Hansen has had this strange power for as long as he can remember, one look into someone's eyes and he knows exactly what emotion they're experiencing in that moment. To him, people's eyes serve as their mood rings, changing colors depending on how they're feeling. The most common color he sees is at school is eyes colored various shades of blue, meaning that the person was bored, tired, or even sad; all of these were acceptable emotions to have in Evan's Shakespearean English class. Evan tended to have trouble focusing on his lessons, 'Just how important is Shakespeare anyway, we've all heard the story of Romeo and Juliet. ', he thought to himself. He instead busied himself with looking around the classroom, seeing the same shades of blue in everyone's eyes.
His eyes traveled to the back of the classroom where he quickly avoided the gaze of Connor Murphy. Connor Murphy was a 'troubled kid,' to say the least. He's always alone and he doesn't have any friends, and his home situation isn't ideal due to past events. He started doing drugs and being a bully, not the best coping mechanism. Connor was a victim to bullying himself, and around the start of Senior year he tried to take his own life, luckily he was found in time. For all of these reasons, Evan was scared to look at his eyes; afraid of what color they would be, and how Connor would react if he noticed him doing so.
Evan must have been staring at the back wall behind Connor for a bit too long because his teacher noticed and asked that he pay attention; he nodded in reply, heart racing from the slight scare. He tried to focus for the rest of class, but his brain decided that just wasn't on the agenda right now. Curiosity seemed to have sparked Evan with newfound courage, his eyes slowly made their way back to the back of the room and once more landed on Connor Murphy. Connor seemed distracted enough for Evan to catch a glimpse of his eyes, he had headphones in and was sketching something on his assignment paper. Evan squinted a bit to get a better look at his eyes when Connor suddenly looked up at him, making eye contact.
Instead of whipping his head back around like he would usually do, he focused on looking into Connor's eyes for just another millisecond. They changed color and they were... black!? Black eyes... Evan had never seen such a thing before. Usually when people were upset, they had dark purple, blue, even gray eyes; but never black. Evan was sure the look of pure shock and a little fear must have been pretty visible on his face, because this shock hit him so suddenly that he froze; and he wasstill staring straight at Connor Murphy.
