Prologue:
Faith squirmed in her sleep as her dreams were haunted by what happened to her family. She still remembered how the flames felt close to her skin. The screaming of her siblings and parents as she tried to open her bedroom door to get to them. One night the family home caught on fire. Faith had been asleep when she heard screaming. She was trapped in her room unable to open her door because a cabinet that stood in the hall fell in front of it. She tried for several minutes to get to her family. The last thing she heard from her family was her father and mother telling her to escape from her window and that they loved her. She cried out as the flames touched her skin and ran to grab as many things she could to throw them into a backpack. She was so close to dying along with them.
She grabbed a photo of her family along with her guitar and frantically crawled out her window. Her window happened to be the only one in the house that was big enough to fit through. she carefully threw her things to the grass and jumped. She ran to a neighbor's house who called the police. She screamed and then woke up with a jolt. She sighed rolling over to look at her clock. 6:00 AM it read as she threw back the covers getting up to pull back her curtains. She never could sleep more than six hours.
She traipsed to her kitchen fixing a cup of tea and grabbing a bagel before sitting down on her couch turning on the news. Her grey pitbull jumping onto the couch next to her. She aimlessly listened to the news and sipped her tea. Once she finished her tea petting the dog's head before getting ready for a run. She quickly slipped on a pair of black leggings and a racerback tank top pairing them with her sneakers. Once she was ready she placed the leash on Killer's collar and pulled him to the door. She locked the door of her Nevada apartment and left down to the streets.
She started her run as Killer's lease was wrapped around her wrist making him run to keep up. She loved how free she felt running in the morning before work, plus she could take Killer out to the bathroom. After running a mile she stopped letting Killer go to the bathroom. They then continued to run back to the apartment. Faith grinned and knelt down to pet the panting dogs head and said "See that was a good run boy. Let's go inside and get ready for work." Once back inside her apartment she let him off his leash and headed to her bathroom. She stripped down and hopped in the shower. She lent her head against the shower wall and let the waterfall down her back. She sighed proceeding to wash her body and hair.
Once she was done she stepped out onto the mat. She quickly dried her hair and body slipping on her work uniform. She whistled to Killer as she reached the door. The pit bull, of course, came running. She smiled petting him and kissing him goodbye locking her door behind her. She ran down to the parking lot and started her car.
She drove straight to the diner she was already late with how long her shower lasted. "Good morning dear, did you and Killer enjoy your run this morning?" Mrs. Ross asked as Faith put her apron on and started putting cupcakes in the case. "We did Mrs. Ross. Did you have any trouble with the morning rush?" Faith replied with a smile. "Psh posh I never do dear Faith and I've told you Mrs. Ross makes me sound so old please call me Mae." Mrs. Ross said.
Faith giggled and apologized. The day continued without a hitch. She really enjoyed her job. She had worked at the diner since she was sixteen. Her smile never left her face, and she was always polite. The customers loved her, especially on open mic night. As the day neared to a close as a group of five men strolled in taking a seat in Faith's section. She smiled walking over after giving them a few minutes to get settled and check the menu.
"Hello Welcome to Mae and Arnold's, can I get some drinks to start off?" She asked.
"Can we just get five cokes and five of your french fry baskets." One asked.
