Don't Leave Me

She sat by her bedside, the beep of the monitors just a noise in the background. She'd fallen asleep a little while ago and she didn't know if she was going to wake up this time. The doctors had all said that they would make her as comfortable as possible, but she couldn't be comfortable, she was dying. Jade was dying. There was no comfort there. She studied her chest as it rose and fell with each labored breath. When she'd promised her forever she didn't think that forever would be so short. They were meant to live a long life together, travel, get married, maybe have kids, a dog, they were meant to have forever. All their dreams were cut short. Too short.

Jade groaned slightly in her sleep as she shifted. Her body was weak and tired. It was worn out. Her body was meant to protect her, help her to grow, her body was meant to look after her and now it was killing her. Why did it have to be her? Why did it have to be someone so good, so pure? She didn't deserve any of this. She deserved so much more.

Jade's eyes fluttered open and although they were bloodshot and heavy lidded, Leigh still saw they sparkling colour she'd fallen in love with.

"Hey." Leigh's voice was soft, barely above a whisper.

"Hey." Jade tried to smile at her, her skin was grey, and she didn't have much longer left now. Leigh knew it and she knew it. It was the small moments like this that they clung to. The last few moments together. How could Leigh tell her how much she meant to her, how she didn't know how to live without her, how she wasn't ready to let her go, to say goodbye? How was she meant to tell her how wonderful she was, that she had changed everything about her life and she didn't want to go back? How was she meant to tell her that she loved her more than anything? Leigh could feel the tears in her eyes, threatening to spill over. She tried not to cry anymore, she knew that it hurt her to see her cry, but she couldn't contain it anymore. She wasn't ready for this. She wasn't ready to say goodbye.

"How long was I asleep?" She asked, her voice was rough and hushed. She shouldn't be talking, she needed more rest.

"Not long baby." Leigh stroked her cheek gently with her fingers, as if she were a paper doll. She was scared to hurt her, cause her anymore pain. As much as she couldn't let her go, as much as she didn't want to say goodbye, she couldn't stand seeing her in pain. There was a part of her that just wished that she could sleep, that she could slip away and that she could be free of the disease that was destroying her. But as soon as the thought came her body would ache with longing for her. She was too selfish. She needed her here.

"Why are you so sad?" She asked as she tried to move her hand to hold hers. Leigh immediately reached out and grabbed it.

"I...." Her words caught in her throat as she began to cry. "I'm not ready to say goodbye." The lump in her throat grew, as did her realization; tonight would be their last night together. She knew that she wouldn't make it till morning. Tonight was going to be the only night that she could say goodbye.

"No one is ever ready." She shook her head slightly.

"I can't..." She mumbled as the tears continued to fall. "I don't want to live in a world where you aren't with me."

"I'm sorry." Her words were whispered, she was losing strength again.

"No. Please. Don't be sorry. Don't let that be your last..." She stopped himself. Leigh couldn't do this. Was there any way she could take her sickness? Let death take her instead. She couldn't live without her.

"I just want you to be happy." She was wheezing, her eyes were closed as she winced through the pain shocking her body.

"I don't know how to be happy without you." Leigh shook her head.

"I don't believe that." Jade almost smiled as she chastised her. She was paling and she knew that this was it. So many things she needed to say to her. So many things she needed to know.

"I'm not ready to let you go." Leigh sobbed, the pain spreading through her chest.

"Me either." She breathed.

"I'm not ready to say goodbye." Leigh shook her head.

"I love you." Her voice was lethargic.

"Please don't leave me. Please" She begged. Leigh would do anything to keep her here with her. Anything the world asked, she would give it. Take her life, take her instead, she had nothing to live for if she was gone.

"I don't think I have a choice." Her voice was faint and he could hear the beeping of the monitor start to slow down. This was it. This was their goodbye.

"I love you." Leigh's voice was weak, gripping her hand tightly, scared that she would break her fingers but too scared to let go.

"Please." Leigh breathed as the tears blurred her vision. The corners of her mouth lifted slightly as she tried to smile, her eyes closed with the effort.

This couldn't be it. This couldn't be the end. This couldn't be the last time that she saw those eyes, her smile, her rosy cheeks. This couldn't be the end. Her chest lifted with a deep breath and Leigh felt her fingers lose their grip. The monitor flat lined, a singular beep echoing around the room. She was gone.

"No.... no.. no... please... no" She looked over her face, memorizing everything that she could as a nurse ran into the room.

"No. Please. Don't leave me. You can't leave me. Wake up. Please baby. Wake up." Leigh was squeezing her hand, trying to prompt a reaction. The nurse went to the other side of the bed and checked her pulse in her wrist and then her neck.

"I'm so sorry." She said before flicking the monitor's monotone beep off.

"No," She repeated holding her limp hand up to her cheek. "Please... please don't leave me."
