Your first chapter:

As a reader, I decide whether or not I want to continue reading a book based on its first chapter. If in the first chapter I notice there are a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes or it's just plain boring then I probably won't continue reading the book.

So here's a few tips:

1) Edit! Edit! Edit!
-Even if you don't edit ANY other chapter of your story, like me, make sure you at least edit the first chapter. Check your spelling by copying everything into google translate! It should tell you if you spelt something wrong. Reread everything you've written to look for mistakes you might have made and not noticed. One trick some authors use is they will put everything into google translate and then LISTEN to it. This way, you can tell if something sounds funny and you can fix it.

2) Make it interesting!
-There isn't one specific way to do this. You can introduce your characters by describing their everyday lives. You can add some humor if you want. Maybe you decide to start right off with the conflict of your story. Some authors actually start in the middle of the story and then pause and explain how the characters got there. My only real advice for this is to put a lot of thought into it. Read how other authors start their stories and draw inspiration from that. BUT DON'T PLAGIARIZE!!!!

I hope this was a helpful first part!
