Amelia's POV
Did I think I'd find myself in this position?
Honestly?
It was bound to happen.
Everyone knew that Rin would end up getting wasted, so it came as no surprise when she bumped into me and seemed on the edge of getting sick. Taking her home was kind of a game to us now, like who was it going to be this time? I'd managed to not be that person yet. Until now.
When Scott asked me to take care of her and get her home, I knew I had the chance to refuse, but I couldn't bring myself to do so. When I looked at her, confused, I couldn't help but feel so worried about her.
I decided then to take on the responsibility of making sure she was safe. After all, we all knew what she was capable of doing in her drunken state.
I had been at the receiving end of her cheesy lines countless times before, and although they were mostly bad, they still weren't good for my heart. Especually not when I used to hold something of an unrequited crush towards her. I wouldn't want someone else to have to go through that.
"Rin, did you bring your car?" I gently ask her, not wanting to make too much noise.
I'd managed to get her out onto the street, but then I'd realized I didn't really know how I would be getting her home. I hear Rin groan from under my arm.
"Okay, we'll just take a cab then. I'll ask Scott to take your car to your apartment," I decide. She mumbles something incoherent.
We make our way to the entrance of the lot and I manage to flag down a cab. I gently get Rin into the cab and sit next to her.
"Where to, lady?" the driver asks from up front.
"Oh. Uh, Rin?" I turn to her next to me. "What's your address again?"
In response, Rin giggles.
Well, I guess I'd have to take her to my place then. I didn't know what else to do. I turn back to the driver and give him my address. Soon enough, we're on our way. For the beginning of the ride, Rin stays mostly quiet. The car bumps around, and I start to get worried that it'll make Rin sick. I turn to her to ask how she's feeling and see her l against the window, facing me. I see her studying my face, a curious expression on her own.
"Is...something wrong?" I ask her.
She realizes I caught her looking and she meets my eyes. She smiles at me and slowly reaches out to touch a strand of my hair.
"I really like your hair," she simply says, and gives me a small smile.
I feel something lurch in my stomach and I swallow hard. I glance at the rear view mirror and catch the driver's eyes. He lifts an eyebrow at me, and I see him laughing.
I inwardly groan. Although I'd decided long ago to get over her, Rin was making this really hard. Trying to brush it off, I laugh and taker her hand.
"Yeah, I like it too."
At that, she closes her eyes, still smiling, cheeks flushed. The beer's effect still prominent as ever, I saw.
"Hey," I start to say softly and I reach out to grab her shoulder. "Don't fall asleep just yet. I know it's a little bumpy, but try not to close your eyes."
She slowly opens them and looks at my hand on her shoulder, then slowly shifts her gaze at me. Without another word, she slowly gets off of the window and scoots next to me. I see her hesitate slightly, and then she lays her head on my shoulder.
The sudden touch surprises me and I had to fight the urge to jump. I notice how warm her face feels against my exposed shoulder and how warm her breath is. I sense her glance at me.
"Is...Is this okay?" I hear her softly ask.
As a matter of fact, it was not. Specifically, I was not. But I nodded anyway.
I put my elbow on the window beside me and lean my face onto my hand. We don't say anything for a while. I suddenly feel her shift and turn back to see her moving her hand. I didn't turn my head completely so she doesn't see me watching as she slowly reaches her hand over mine and holds it. I hear her breath out and look out our hands as she intertwines our fingers. She catches my eyes and smiles again.
If my face wasn't red before, it sure was now. She doesn't ask me anything this time, waiting to see if I'll let go instead. Just like last time, I don't do anything. I simply turn back around to look out the window. After some time, I feel her start to stroke the outside of my hand with her thumb. With each stoke, jumbles of electricity seem to flow from my hands up to my arms.
Still, I couldn't find any strength to move.
I didn't want to, actually.
I wonder why.
