Chapter One~The Strange Case
Coleson
I was happily sleeping peacefully in my bed when the shrill sound of my ringtone blared and echoed throughout the room.
"Shit!"
I groggily grabbed the small device and stabbed the answer button with my finger, missing a couple times in the process.
"What?" I hissed into the receiver.
"Taylor, we need you." Said the voice on the other end.
"Get day shift to take care of it." I said.
My boss, Joel, sighed.
"I can't.” He said.
“Look, just come take a look at it, will ya? I'll make it worth your while, I promise."
And with that, he hung up.I grumbled some more about having to get up so early in the day, but eventually made my way to my en suite bathroom anyway.
Once I was clean, I trudged over to my closet and pulled out a pair of dark blue jeans with a dark gray long sleeved collared shirt and black tie. I grabbed my black trench coat and headed downstairs to grab an apple and a bottle of B+ blood.
After downing the bottle of thick red liquid, I hurriedly bit into my apple and snatched up my keys, wallet and phone up from the little table by the front door. I had to shield my eyes with my hand as I stepped outside.
Sighing, I got into the car and drove to work. When I got there, I went straight into Joel's office without bothering to knock first.
"Alright, what the hell is so different about this case that required interrupting my sleep?" I asked him impatiently.
Joel didn't say anything as he handed me a Manila folder containing the case report and pictures from the crime scene. I took it without a word and opened it before slamming the folder back closed and standing up.
"Is this some sort of sick joke?!" I hissed.
Joel swiped his hand down his face.
"I wish it was, Coleson." He said.
“I wish it was.”
I couldn't miss the utter tiredness in the older man's face and voice if I tried.
"How long have you been working on this thing? You look and sound terrible." I stated.
"Believe it or not, I just got the call this morning." Joel replied.
I sat back down and picked the folder back up, this time reading through the notes.
"This is insane." I whispered to myself.
"Does that mean you'll take it?" Joel asked hopefully.
"Of course I'll take it.” I said, probably a little too gleefully for the case I just got.
“Just wait til the rest of my team hears this."
I practically vibrated in my seat."Yeah, I figured I'd let you see it first before just handing it off to you guys.” Joel said.
“I know that if anyone can figure it out, it'd be you guys. Good luck."
I nodded and left the office. I headed down to where I just knew my team would be. Once I walked in, everyone turned and looked at me in shock.
"What? The big bad vampire is at work during the day? It must be a cold day in hell." My right hand and second in command, Lawrencia exclaimed.
The rest of the team laughed as I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever. Get your asses over here and look at this case we just got." I said.
Everyone got up and walked over to where I was standing. I passed the folder around to everyone and they stared at it in shock.
“Coleson, man is this for real?” Someone asked.
I nodded my head, trying to tamper my excitement a bit. It was pretty evident that everyone on my team was trying to do the same.
This was clearly a case unlike anything we had ever seen before.
If only we had known just how different and difficult it'd be to solve…A/N: Short chapter, I know, but we getting back into it. Lemme know how y'all feel about it, pls 🥺 Thank you!
