Everything was perfect. Nothing and I mean nothing could bring me down today. It had officially been a year since my boyfriend Allen and I started dating. He was my one and only. My knight in shining armor. I loved him as much as he loved me. He had a special evening planned for the two of us. I could hardly wait.
It was still before lunch when I began to get ready. My rusty brown hair curled into fair size ringlets. they bounced when I tapped them. They were absolutely perfect. Then I continued on to my nails. It was a rarity to ever paint them nowadays. They used to be painted almost every day. My sister Nikki made sure of it. Two years ago she got married and moved off. That ended my painted nails. Now they were only done if it was an extremely important event. Which in my point of view this was one of those. I ran around my room looking for my box of polish. It was blue with rhinestones all over it. Nikki made it For me when I was turning 14. I searched everywhere for it. I was on the verge of tears when I thought it was really lost. Felling like it all was hopeless I turned, and there it was sitting right on the edge of my dresser.
"I really am an idiot," I told myself jokingly.
Nikki had always called me an idiot when I misplaced stuff. it would always be a joke though. She would never purposefully drug someone down. There was not one mean bone in her body. Sometimes I wondered how she could possibly be that way. She always said the same thing, "because I grew up with taking care of you." She did help Mom quite a bit I heard. She was 10 years older than me so its not a big surprise.
I finished my nails. They were a metallic white with small red dots in them. That was Nikki's favorite way to do them. I always felt closest to her when that was the pattern.
I was almost finished with my make-up when Mom called me down for lunch. Slowly I crept down the stairs. Mom stood at the bottom smiling. It was the real cheesy one she had when there was something to announce. I knew that far too well. Her lips would almost literally touch each ear. Her teeth showed and eyes darted around the room. Sometimes it was disturbing like when she did it after Nikki got engaged. She held her face in that one position for three hours.
"What is it Mom," I questioned her.
"Darling its nothing just that," she cut off.
"Just what?"
"You will be staying with Nikki for two weeks to help her with the baby."
NO! I wanted to yell at her. I didn't want to go to some dirt farm covered with bugs and grass. I didn't even like her husband that much. Why couldn't Rose or Elisabeth help. They were her sister-in-law's and only lived a quarter mile from her house! Besides the fact I was allergic to her dogs.
Mom saw that I really wasn't pleased by this. "We will be leaving in two days to be there a week in advance to help around the house. You will stay there two extra weeks. No exceptions!"
I didn't argue she was mad. When Mom is mad well, an angry grizzly sounds more pleasant. I continued my walk to the dining table, and had a short lunch.
