I want to share with you all a story. Just so we are clear this story is not about me. This is a story about my friend. Liza Mitchells. She and I were born into being life long friends. My family are friends with hers. Concieved together. Only I'm a day older than her. Our friendship was strong. We had eachothers backs no matter what.
Now most kids picked on us from time to time. Claiming that Liza and I were 'boyfriend and girlfriend'. Which subsided over the years until we hit fifth grade. No matter what conflict arised in our lives. We always stayed together. Think back on all the times we spent. There was never a dull moment. Skittles was our favorite candy. Root Beer floats was an everyday addiction.
After school, Liza and I would go down to the local Tasty Freeze and order us both a large root beer float. Extra whip cream of course. Shared an order of cheese fries and talked. Days with her was perfect. I never forget it. The story I'm going to share starts two days before graduation. The day I wish I could have taken back.
~May 23, 1988~
Liza and I are in the hallway clearing our lockers out. Well, we both shared the locker. But, most of the stuff in it was her crap. I pulled down our millons of polaroid pictures taped on the back of the door. I handed them to her as she placed it a box. She smiled at me exposing those pearly white teeth of hers. He brown hair pulled up into a side pony tail. She had neon colored scrunchies holding it up and a pink bow.
She wore a jean jacket over a hot pink off the shoulders long sleeve shirt, biker shorts over black leggings, leg warmers, and pink flats. I loved the way she dressed. Big neon green hoop earrings and heavy metal bracelts. Her bright green eyes glowed behind the heavy blue eyeshadow. You'd think after so many years together she and I would have been a couple. Not even a drunken one night stand changed that. It was during our junior year and let just things got pretty akward.
I smiled back her taking her hand into mine. Liza let out a sigh and hugged me. "I still can't believe you're leaving me." she said. "Don't say that. I promise to call and write." I assured. "You're going to be busy with college. Don't make those kinds of promises. You suck at it." She turned from me upset while continuing to empty the locker. "Liza, I love you. You're my best friend. Have I ever let you down before?" She gave me a weak smile closing the locker door. "Never." she answered.
I take the box of stuff we were keeping and headed toward the exit. Her arm rested over my shoulder as we walked toward my car. I opened the door for her and she gets in. I jumped in roaring the engine speed out of the parking lot. I drove over to my house and park the car in the garage.
Liza took off inside to the house. Straight to the refrigerator everytime she's here. I smiled at her as she pulled out a soda. "Do you have any chips?" she asked. "In the pantry. Top shelf." She goes into the pantry pulling down a big bag of potato chips. I busted out laughing as she began eating. Liza frowned at me. "Stop laughing at me." she snapped giggling. "You're a cute little pig." She threw a chip at me.
I take Liza upstairs to my room. We played some Def Leppard while we read comic books and talked. The day dragged on as we spent our last hours together. I hated having to leave off for college. Poor Liza wasn't able to get into college. Parents unable to pay. She told me she's trying to get a scholarship. Hopefully, next year she gets in. I'm truly going to miss her.
