I pulled up to the apartment. There were other individuals outside laughing and talking. I walked past them and searched for B15. It was a rural area with possible gang members and prostitutes. I know because I got the wink from them. The air stenched of marijuana and alcohol. I found the apartment and went up the stairs. I knocked on the door and waited for an answer.

I heard a strange raspy voice from behind the door. "Who the hell is that knocking on my door?!" I jumped when the door flew open. There stood Liza with messy hair, pale, and eyes dilated. Her arms had scratched and scared. She had a simply stained dress on with no shoes. Her legs covered in bruises and she appear very thin. I see the bat in her and as she glared at me. "Who the fuck are you?! You have any idea what time it is?!" she snapped.

I quickly ducked when Liza swing the bat at me. The metal from the railing rang from impact. I held my hands up to her afraid she might hit me again. "Liza please its me Robert!" I blurted out. The bat hit the ground as her eyes widen. She walks up to me running her hands all over my face. Tears formed in those pretty green orbs I once knew. "Rob? Is it really you?" asked Liza. "Yes." I replied. I wanted to cry myself.

She takes my hand and led me into the apartment. "Sorry about the mess. I've been meaning to clean. You want something to drink?" she asked walking through the curtain to her kitchen. "No thanks." I replied. The room was a mess. Clothes everywhere, mold on the dishes and smelled. She comes back out sitting on the stool.

Liza was a far cry from the girl I once knew. She lite up a cigarette and drank from the bottle of beer. I can see her scratching at her arms and neck. I hate this. "Liza, I talked with your mom. She told that are on..." "This is an unexpected suprise. I meant to send you a letter. I've just been busy." interrupted Liza.

She's obviously in denial. "Sweety, what happen to you?" "You look great by the way. Did college go well?" "Liza, you know you can talk to me about anything." I walked towards her. "I didn't get the scholarship. I guess I'll never get to experience what you had. Probably for the best." I cupped my hands around her face. She refused to look at me. "I'm here for you. Talk to me."

Her eyes burned in anger as she shoved me away. "Bullshit! You have a life to live. Why can't you go and leave mine alone?!" she yelled. "We both know I can't. Liza you are my life. I'm worried about you!" I said. "No need to that. I'm fine." "No you're not. Look at you. What happen to that beautiful Liza? The one who always smiled, told jokes, and was there for me when I needed you?"

I watched her down the beer and slammed it down on the counter. She walked toward the front door opening it. "Go home, Robert. You don't need me anymore." she sighed avoiding eye contact. I stepped to her ran my finger down her cheek. "No matter how much you fight me. I'm not leaving you alone. I will always need you." I placed a kissed her forehead and walked out. I can hear the door slam behind me hard.

I went down the stairs and got into the car. I sat there banging my fist on the steering wheel. I covered my face and sobbed. This is all my fault. I should have never left. My best friend is slowly killing herself. I know she hates me and I agree with her. I started the car and began driving home. Tonight was the worst. My parents are about to hear me.

I arrived home storming inside. I see my parents at the kitchen table talking with Hannah. My blood is boiling. "Babe, are you okay?" asked Hannah taking my hand. I yanked it away still staring my parents in rage. "No, I'm not! Why did you tell me?!" I replied. "Son, calm down." said my dad. "We didn't want this Liza thing to ruin your studies." mention my mother.

I scoffed at her in disbelief. "You both broke a promise to me! You two know how much she means to me!" I can feel Hannah's burned at the side of my head. I don't care but, its true. "We're sorry." "I'm sure you're sorry. How can you let Liza go through this addiction?! So much for family being there for those in need. You both make me sick." I turned to Hannah. "Help me get our stuff. I can't stay underneath the same roof as the people who ruined lives."

I take Hannah's hand and went upstairs. I was so angry I just shoved things in the suitcase. "Babe, I don't understand how can worry about someone who chose the drug life. It's her problem not yours." said Hannah. I slammed my hand on the dresser and faced her. "Are you fucking kidding me?! She's my best friend. I can't allow her to keep doing drugs. Liza needs me now." I bellowed. "Robert, you are my fiancé and the love of my life. How can you expect me to be okay with this? Especially, after what you said in there? I thought I meant everything to you!"

I ignored her and continued packing. I don't have time for this. "I take it your not going to answer me. I guess what we have is a lie?!" continued Hannah. "Honey, could you please drop this? I love you very much. Let's not argue no more." I replied giving her a hug. "Fine." I gave her peck on the lips. My parents tried to stop us from leaving but, I can't forgive them. I got us a hotel room. As I laid in bed, I couldn't stop thinking about Liza. She looked so different and wasting away. I don't care if she pushes me away. I'm going to help her whether she wants it or not.
