Chapter 1: Romance Is Too Cliche

I sighed and shut the book I was reading. Giving a grunt I chucked it at the chair in front of me.

The librarian gave me a warning look and narrowed her eyes.

I stared right back and she finally looked away.

I picked up the book and stared in frustration. The good girl always falls for the bad girl. It's so stupid. I mean it's not like any of that stuff that happens in books ever happens in real life.

All the cute conversations are set up and thought of by the writer. All the guys are perfect kissers and the girls are short and tiny while guys are all fit and muscular.

I ran a hand through my wavy dirty blonde hair and stood up, blowing through my lips.

This is stupid.

I shoved the book in a random shelf, picked up my bag and left the library.

I pushed my way through the door and let the smell of food carts and gasoline fill my nostrils.

Living that New York City life.

Whoopdeedoo.

I walked up the sidewalk and came to a light.

I pressed the button and waited about 5 seconds before jamming impatiently.

The walking light finally turned green and I walked across the street to a cafe.

I am quite hungry.

The bell on the door rang and I stepped up to order.

"Could I get the BLT, with barbecue chips, and the chocolate and vanilla milkshake?"

"That'll be $11.98." He states flatly.

I hand him a 10 and two ones and he just stares at the cash register and gives me the change.

I pull the sandwich and chips out of the bag and unwrap the sandwich.

I take a bite, savoring the bacon, lettuce, and tomato.

A short girl walks by leaning into her tall muscular boyfriend, who has his arm wrapped around her possessively.

I scoff. Romance is too cliche. Honestly like hun, wake up this is reality.

I know what you're thinking.

Wow this Evangeline girl is a bitch that's adorable. Who doesn't believe in love?

Well first, please, call me Evan. Or Eva, or Eve but just not Evangeline.

And second, I don't believe that's who. You'll fall in love just to find out they're cheating, or they don't love you back.

I finished up my lunch and trashed it.

Love is just a game that no one can ever win.

I walked back to my apartment, unlocking the door and greeting my roommate.

"Meghan? You there?" I called.

I heard a bark in response and smiled as our golden lab Willie came into view, with Meghan right behind him.

She laughed as Willie jumped up and slobbered all over me.

"Ugh Willie." I said laughing, too.

He left the room as I sat my bag down and plopped myself on the couch.

I groaned and ran my hand down my face.

Meghan tossed her brown locks over her shoulder and sighed.

"What is it?" her honey eyes filled with slight concern.

"I'm sick of love!" I snap.

"Oh not that again Evan." she complains.

"Yeah I know. I know."

"Maybe I'll just go drive to the dog park out of the city and take Willie for a walk. Fresh air." I say.

She tosses me the leash and dog bag and gives me a quick hug. I return it, leaving the house.

I drove to the dog park with an amused smile on my face the whole time. It was a while away from the city.

Willie was excited as all get out. His long tounge was hanging out the window as he panted happily, letting the wind hit his face.

I chuckled and parked the car, linking the leash to his collar and grabbing the poop bags.

I opened his door and he rushed out excitedly sniffing everything he could find.

We entered the park.

It was huge. There was a trail that led off some where and different dog stuff, like slides and equipment, just sitting around. I laughed as the dog walked all cautiously around the fountain.

All the dogs sniffed each others butts.

I scrunch up my nose.

Love. Bleh.

We decided to take the trail leading off into the woods or forests or whatever it was.

Willie was excited, but I just relaxed and plugged in my headphones.

I realized this trail was taking us up a mountain.

There were lots of wooded areas in New York, as well as mountains, so I wasn't surprised.

It smelled of pine wood and the leaves crunched beneath our feet.

Willie decided to stop and I tugged on his leash.

"Come on why're you stopping?"

He gave me a look and crouched over to poo.

I looked away. "Aw Willie. Really?" I said as I scooped it up and put it in the bag.

I scrunched up my nose.

It wasn't until 15 minutes later that I realized we had wondered off the path.

Shoot.

We kept walking and it was getting steeper and steeper.

I unplugged my headphones and looked around.

I spotted something moving.

I moved closer.

A dog? No, it was too big.

It was a bear.

I backed up into a tree and locked Willie's leash so he wouldn't get himself killed by attacking the thing.

How far had we wondered off the trail?

I remembered reading about something. Saying black bear population was growing in western New York.

I racked my brain for anything on what to do when you meet a bear. I couldn't remember.

Willie growled and crouched, and I shushed him.

"Don't move." I heard someone whisper as their hot breath fanned my neck.

A/N

My pathetic attempt at a cliff hanger.
