There was a silence as Leopold realized this implication before he bowed his head and knelt behind Adina. I apologize for my words, my lady. I will do whatever you ask.

After his outburst, Leopold stayed kneeling with his head bowed while Adina was given instruction and direction from the council. Leopold could feel someone watching him but didnt dare lift his head in defiance again. He stayed in his meek position and allowed Adina to take control of her destiny.

Come, Leo, Adina said as she passed, placing her hand gently yet firmly on his shoulder. Let us prepare to leave.

Leopold stood and as he lifted his head his eyes locked with the young girl. She looked fearful as she mouthed two words. Please hurry. Or, thats what Leopold thought he saw anyway. Leopold nodded toward her and stood, turning to follow the princess of Domum.

They walked from the council meetinghouse quietly but once they were out of range of listening ears Adina stopped Leopold and glared at him. How dare you speak against the council like that? You humiliated me. What if I refuse? Who are you to even have that choice?

I am sorry, princess, Leopold said evenly, trying to keep his voice even. It will not happen again. I will not embarrass you any further.

Adina stared at him for a moment before shaking her head and walking away. I doubt that, but come on anyway.

They parted ways at the fork to return to their own homes to collect supplies and say their goodbyes. Leopold took his mothers hand as he passed through the festival. She turned to him with a smile which quickly faded away as she gathered her skirts and quickly followed him.

Whats wrong, Leo? she asked.

Princess Adina and I have received a task from the council, he said softly. We must leave Domum for a time, and I do not know when we will return.

Anora turned Leopold and stared in his face. But you promise you will return? she said softly. Leo leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

I promise, mother. If only for you, I will come home.

What will you be needing? Anora asked him, walking into her home.

Im not sure. Some food and supplies, I guess.

Will you be walking or will you take a horse?

Idont know that either.

Well do you know what you will be doing at least? Anora asked exasperatedly.

Yes, Leopold decided in a quick moment not to tell her the nature of the quest. He didnt wish any pain upon her and worried telling her would do just that. But I cant tell you that.

Anora didnt say anything more, just handed him a bag of food. Stay safe, she whispered.

I will. And with that Leopold left to find Adina.

He found her walking down the center street of the village, holding the reigns to two horses. Come on, she said. Theres no time to lose.

They climbed upon their horses and quickly rode away from the village. On horse back it only took a couple of hours for them to reach the first lookout position for the border patrolmen. Adina rode right up to the front porch and leapt of her horse, calling for the lead patrolman. Instead, Leopold saw his own brother Aldus leave the cabin. Princess Adina! What in the world is wrong, has something happened at the festival?

No, Sir Aldus, everything is fine in Domum, she assured him with a smile. I must just alert you and your men that we will be away for anunknown amount of time. And, if all goes well, we will be returning with an extra person.
