Chapter one:
Aaron
"Aaron would you shut up! It's just a damn book!" Cassie exclaims her blonde waves falling in front of her stunning blue eyes. I look at her calmly trying my best to not cuss my dumb crazy blonde friend out.
"Cassandra it is not my fault your IQ is limited as much as it is. If you were smart maybe you would realize that this book is more then just words on a page." Cassie rolls her eyes at me. This, of course, is the not the first time I've insulted her intelligence.
Can you blame me? The main character who I had fallen in love with was just killed by his best friend!
"Anyway, Aaron I've got to go get ready for the party tonight," Cassie says standing and gathering her crap- er I mean her stuff. Now it's my turn to roll my eyes. The only reason she's going is to get laid, and no I'm not just saying that because I still haven't lost my precious V-card. I want my first time to be special, or at least that's what I tell people. Truth is not many people appreciate how big of a nerd I am. Which is fine by me, true love is the guy who will willingly listen to me rant about the current book I'm reading.
"Just a small town girl!" I blush as my phone blares my ringtone throughout the coffee shop and I stumble to answer it.
"Hello?" I say standing and throwing a couple dollars on the table for a tip as I leave.
"Aaron I need you to run by the office and pick up a few things for your mother to sign." Dad doesn't even bother to offer a greeting making me sigh away from the phone. I feel the love.
"Sure thing dad." I get in right before he hangs up. I roll my eyes and start walking towards his office. You'd think after eighteen years of being of me being in his life he would show a little love. Honestly, my parents didn't even want to have kids, they got pregnant with me on their second honeymoon. Now I'm not complaining about the lifestyle we have because is a multi-billionaire and all that, but with money comes responsibility. My parents and I have an image we have to standby. Not to toot my own horn but I've done a damn well job at keeping my image in place. I graduated last year valedictorian of my class and never once got anything less than an A. I always had perfect attendance and have never gotten in any type of legal trouble.
There's just one thing: I'm gay. I spent years trying to convince myself I wasn't. I dated girls after girls all who my best friend Cassie swore were the hottest in school. Though honestly, I didn't see it. Cassie is the only one who knows, I have no idea how my parents would react though they would be more concerned what the world thinks instead of their own personal preference. So I keep quiet and whenever mother asks why I'm single I just tell her I'm waiting for that special girl who I'm going to sweep off her feet. I know its cheesy but hey it makes her shut up.
I walk into dads building intending on going straight to the elevator but I'm stopped by what looks like a new security guard considering I've never seen him before.
"Sir, I need to see an ID." He says. I frown but still reach into my back pocket and pull out my wallet anyway. Why the new security? Dad has never been worried about it before. He nods after quickly looking at my driver's license and hands it back to me waving me forward. As I walk to the elevator I look around trying to see if anything is different. Though the only weird thing I see is the boy who is an elevator with me. He looks to be around my age but he's wearing a hospital mask so all I can see is his blonde hair and really, really icy blue eyes.
"Flu season is terrible this year," I say trying to make conversations because I hate when the elevators are awkwardly silent. I glance his way but he never looks away from the wall. I sigh as I bite the inside of my cheek if it wasn't awkward before it definitely is now. He gets off at the thirtieth floor and I'm left alone for the next twenty.
"Hey, dad what's with the new security?" I ask stepping off the elevator and walking straight to his desk.
"Just some precautions that's all." He says not looking up from his paperwork. Dad has always been the casual parent believe it or not when he's not surrounded by work he just relaxes at home. Mother, on the other hand, won't even allow me to call her mom, she thinks she deserves to be treated like royalty and it drives me crazy.
"Here." He says sliding a pile of papers my way then again without looking up. "And inform your mother I will not be home for dinner tonight."
"Of course," I say standing and heading towards the door. Inform. Wow, why couldn't have just said ' please tell your mother I'll be late for dinner'. No, it has to sound like their business partners-
"Lock down!" My thoughts are interrupted as the intercom blares and the buildings emergency lights flicker on after a brief moment of darkness, red flashing throughout the room. I look back at dad but he's already trying to figure out what the hell is going on. As far as I know, the lock downs have only ever been drills, nothing like this has ever happened before.
Dad slams his phone into the receiver running his hands through his hair looking very pissed off.
"What happened?" I ask and he mumbles shaking his head before actually looking at me like he didn't hear the question.
"The cameras were shut off thirty minutes ago and whoever did this was working with the new security guard we just hired, which means it could have been anyone who walked in the door the last half hour." I frown feeling very lost, did it?
"Did what dad?" I ask. He looks up at me with an expression I've never seen him wear in the nineteen years I've been alive. Fear.
"Emerson Richards one of my lower business partners was just murdered.
