Chapter Three:
Aaron
"Mother," I say in greeting as I sit next to her and whatever dim-witted girl she dragged with her with time. I should have known the only reason she wanted to have lunch was so I could meet another suitor.
"Aaron dear! I'm so glad you could make it! This is Lauren she's one of your father's business partners daughters." Mother says. It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes, mother has never been this kind or energetic before.
"So I was thinking dear, it would be rather nice of you to take Lauren to see a play at the new theatre." Mother says and my eyes go wide my fork hitting my plate.
"Today?" I ask. Mothers eyes narrow and I avert mine looking down and picking up my fork.
"Yes today, after lunch actually there's a show at three. It's not like you have anything better to do." She says crossly taking a long sip of her wine. I close my eyes and nod taking a deep breath.
"Of course I would love to," I say and mothers frown turns to a wide smile. Lauren who has been quite clearly checking me out the entire time just has a smug look on her face. One that I would just love to slap off.
I try to enjoy the rest of my meal but it's hard with mom asking Lauren all these questions. And the worst part is she still calls her father daddy. It makes me want to gag, you are twenty-three for god's sake! Not to mention I'm pretty sure she stuffs her bra because there is no way someone that skinny has boobs that big. I'm sorry but I can not stand people as fake as she is. She has blonde hair (with obvious extensions) and blue eyes. It looks like she has freckles but she is wearing so much makeup I can't really tell. I mean Cassie has blonde hair and blue eyes too but she doesn't look like some spoiled brat.
"Are you ready Aaron?" I hear and look up to see Lauren standing and gathering her things. I look down at my half-finished plate and sigh nodding and grabbing my jacket.
"I'll see you Sunday dear." Mother says kissing my cheek and making her way towards the cashier. I nod and lead Lauren outside and to my car opening the door for her. She climbs inside slowly so she doesn't ruin her precious dress which in my opinion is way to fancy to be wearing outside.
"So what play are we going to watch?" I ask as I start the car thankful I can stare at the road instead of her.
"The Nutcracker, of course, it is nearing the holidays," Lauren says in this snobby tone like I should have known all this already. Jesus, it's only October I didn't think they would be showing Christmas shows yet. Lord, this is going to be a long night
By the time the play ends I'm practically on the edge of my seat, and no not because of the initial suspense provided by the play.
"So wine at your place then?" Lauren says as we leave the theatre causing me to miss a step and almost fall on my face. When I look back up at Lauren she's looking at me expectantly and all my hope of coming up with an excuse to say no is gone. She has her phone in her hand probably ready to call her precious "daddy" if I even try to say no.
"Of course," I say climbing back into the car and trying my best not to sigh.
As I focus back on the road my mind drifts to the boy from last night. Cassie and I found him slumped against the tree with hand marks around his neck. I couldn't just leave him there and I didn't know if he would have wanted to go to the hospital. Besides, if I was seen carrying someone to the emergency room beat half to death who knew what rumors would spread. I noticed when I laid him down he had a pretty big bump on the back of his head with dried blood surrounding it. Handprints on his neck and a blunt force trauma on the back of his head..I could only imagine what he went through. I have to admit I was pretty bummed out when he didn't say anything but then again, I don't blame him because I would be freaked out if I woke up at a strangers house too.
"Aaron! Are you listening to me!" I hear jumping and putting the car in park. Has she been talking to me all this time? It was a thirty-minute ride...Oops?
"Sorry, I like to focus on driving," I say opening her door.
"Yes, well I suppose that is smart," Lauren says looking at the apartment building with disgust. I opted not to take one of the estates my mother offered me, instead I rented one of the college apartments. I don't want to be the 'rich' kid everyone always talks about. I wanted the real college experiment and to do that I needed to learn how to live by myself. Which was actually quite refreshing...Well besides the fact that I don't know how to cook to save my life. My apartment is small but cozy and still fancy in a way, the only downfall is that my parents insisted we have their preferred security system. Which scared that kid half to death whenever he tried to open the window. The look on his face was priceless when I opened the door!
"So Aaron, tell me what do you like to do for fun," Lauren says putting the glass of wine I literally just poured for her down and scooting closer to me, putting her hand on my thigh. Oh God, help me please give me a distraction.
'Knock, knock..' Frantic knocking comes from the front door making me jump to my feet and almost sprint up to it, Lauren grumbling behind me. Though that quickly ceased once I opened the door to reveal the same boy from before, bleeding and panting heavily.
"Aaron..help..please!" he gets out before his eyes roll to the back of his head and he falls forward.
