So close.

"Wait what?" Confusion hits me harder than a brick and I scratch my head.

"I didn't realize you were gay."  She says skipping past me.

"No, I'm not gay."

She stops and turns around, "But you just..."  We both stare at each other for a couple seconds before I raise my eyebrows causing her to shift slightly.  "Oh."

With defeat plastered across my self like Vegas lights, I slowly slump up the hill after her but this time, she doesn't move.  "Yeah..." Is the only response I can come up with.

"Oh."  She repeats.  "uh... fuck." I look up at her wearily pausing again.  I notice the setting sun, illuminating her in gold, casting her shadow upon me.  The pink golden sky shimmering across the treetops.

"I uh..." I begin but quickly fail.

"Huh."  I watch her fall to the ground with the same defeat plastered on her.

She doesn't say anything, just sits there staring at the ground.  I feel seconds go by like hours, waiting for a reaction but nothing comes.  Anything?  Anything is better than nothing, please don't be nothing.

Please be something. Anything.

"So..." She begins but doesn't seem to know where to.  "you were talking about... me?"

"Yes."  I cringe at how heavily hesitance can be heard in my voice.

"Well, I uh.  That's something."

"I guess it is."  I hang my head shamefully.

Silence.

"Well I... I'm not disappointed."  She slowly raises her head and I look to her with suspicion.

"So, what does that mean?"

"It means... I kind of feel the same way."

"Kind of?"

"Okay, well, for a while." She begins to stand up and for some reason I want to back away and step closer at the same time.

"And uh, how long is a while?" I say it quietly not fully wanting to know the answer.

"A couple years maybe."  I stop before looking right at her, feeling myself loose the air I was already grasping as if I were drowning.

"A couple years?"

"I didn't know what I was feeling, and I didn't want to ruin what he had, have.  Theo you're my best friend what would I do if I did something stupid and ruined this?" Maybe I am drowning.

"That's... exactly what I thought."

"Great minds?"  She looks at me with a broken smile and I try to return one but it comes out just as shattered.

There's a large pause of anticipation and silence as we both rack our heads and hearts of what to say next and what to do with this newfound information on one another.

"So where does that leave us?" We sat it nearly at the same moment.

As we stare at each other with wonder her eyes tell me to go first, so I slowly begin, "I guess that leaves us with each other?"

"I'd like that."  She takes a step closer to me.

"I'd like that too."  I find my hand in hers, with our bodies closer together than any time before.

"So... we're together?"

"Not many people to tell?"

"Hey!" She playfully shoves me back.
