Chapter Six

Genevieve’s POV

The train lurched to a stop outside Tyler Station. The breaks squealing in my ear, I could feel my heart topple down to the pit of my stomach.  My breathing hitched as I flicked my gaze to the closed doors knowing the moment they opened I had no choice but to run. There was no doubt in my mind that Greyson would be waiting.

Mrs. Crockett had fallen asleep thirty minutes ago. Gazing at her peaceful face I decided that I wasn’t going to wake her. Slowly I stood sliding my bag on my shoulder. Peering over the seat in front of me to see no one; I climbed up over the top. I landed with a dull thud and leapt from the leather. Racing towards the bathroom door I threw it open and closed it, securely locking it from behind.

I waited. I knew that even on train’s they checked the bathrooms before finalizing the unloading of passenger’s process. The knock on the door would be the beginning of my plan. I’d open the door innocent as could be and nod to his ‘we’re unloading now miss” and than ask him if he knew where 23 Appaloosa Avenue was.

That’s when the knock came. A slight rapping at the door, “Excuse me?”

Taking a deep breath I opened the door and smiled, “Yes?”

The attendant was the same one from before. The bored one who had hole punched our tickets. He was grim looking as if he couldn’t wait to finish unloading the train and check out.

“We’re unloading now miss” He said harshly, “You must leave”

I nodded and stepped out of the bathroom, closing the door. Turning to face him I grabbed his arm before he could leave. He glared at me in silent demanding for me to release my hold.

“Could you tell me the directions to Appaloosa Avenue?” I chirped faking happiness.

The attendant sighed loudly and peaked out the window over his shoulder. He didn’t seem to find what he had been looking for so he turned back to me and frowned, bored.

“Ma’am I suggest you take a taxi” He clipped, “If you walk, it’s nearly forty minutes away from here. By car it’s just ten.”

I shook my head feeling dread flood through my body. I had no money for a taxi. All the money I had was going towards getting me on my way once I moved in with Aunt Harriet. I couldn’t be her charity case, some of the things I needed I would buy myself with my own money. Money I wouldn’t waste on a taxi.
