Chapter 21

Music Playing: Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy

With Alex’s suggestion, I went back to the chair I had occupied moments ago. Jillian and Liz were still seated there and they casted me a questioning look. It seemed that they have been watching my conversation with Alex with utmost interest.

With a curious expression, Jillian asked “Did we just witness a lover’s spat there?” Her eyes had a knowing twinkle and a sly smile was strewn on her face.

“Did you guys kiss and make up yet?” teased another familiar voice. The three of us turned to see the owner of the voice and realized it was Mike. His curly hair was a mess and a lopsided grin was plastered on his face. Beside him was Blue who had a frugal smile and Alex who smirked at the remark.

Instead of replying to their remarks, I shot Alex a look which he also returned.

“Wow, so you guys have a new way of communicating now?” interjected Liz as she caught our exchange. She eyed both Alex and me and suppressed her grin. “You can understand each other by looking,” she added.

“So much for not being together,” Jillian stated with a smile.

“Will you guys stop it?” I bellowed at all of them and gave them a glare. “We are not together, ok?” I added and emphasized the not. The frustration was clearly evident in my voice but instead of taking me seriously they all just snickered like they knew something that I didn’t. It irritated me that they couldn’t read the cues and continued to tease us. What the hell is wrong with them?

As annoyance gripped me I rose from my seat and faced Alex. “Tell them I’m not your girlfriend,” I demanded and crossed both of my arms in my chest.

Alex was gauging my seriousness and I shot him a scowl to let him now that I was dead serious. Finally getting the message he opened his mouth. “Adie is not my girlfriend,” he stated. “Yet,” he added at the end and smiled.

What?

His comment had taken me aback and I could not come up with a good retort. The butterflies in my stomach had been tickled once again.

“Because Adie is not yet ready to admit her feelings. So we’re keeping it a secret for now,” Alex said to the group with a playful lilt and a wink.

His statement almost made me fell off from my chair. What the hell?

The group grinned widely at his remark and turned their attention towards me.

“Alex,” I exclaimed loudly, frustration creeping in my voice. I had gathered stares from passersby and the group with my little display. But it didn’t bother me one bit.

“What? I was just telling them the truth babe,” Alex teased with a mischievous glint.

“Don’t believe him,” I told everyone firmly. “He’s just playing. Will you quit it?” I berated at him and gave him a scowl. Alex’s reply was a smirk.

“Enough of the lovers’ quarrel already. You don’t have to rub it in our faces that you guys are together,” Liz told Alex and me.

“I told you we are not together,” I exclaimed releasing the frustration that had built up earlier.

Seeing my exasperated demeanor, Alex put his hand at my back to calm me. “Let’s stop. Adie is getting worked up. So let’s stop with the teasing for now, ok?” He told the group and gave me an arrogant smirk.
