Prologue

It was a cold night in the elven kingdom. The cry of a newborn infant can be heard from deep within the palace walls. The childs wailing was strong and it was clear that it was healthy.

But not everyone saw this as a reason to rejoyce.

"What is this! This..this Thing!" a voice filled with disgust can be heard.

"My lady...," another voice this one of pity but for the mother or child it is not clear.

"Cast it out!" the first voice cried,"I won't touch such a vile thing! I never want to see it again!"

"As you wish milady," the second voice responded.

A short time later a figure emerged from the castle a bundle cluched protectively to her chest. As the figure laid the bundle in the river the young maid says something.

"Please live little princess," she begged in a voice filled with tears,"Please, I beg you, live. Only you, a princess of two kingdoms, and a half-elf, can free our people from persecution.

And with that she released the basket, and it bobbed down river toward a new life, one with hope, and love, and family.

In a small village far from the castle a man stood by the river, tears flowing down his face. His wife was at home with their three sons, for she had just given birth to their stillborn daughter. A cry broke throuhg his grief. The cry of a newborn infant. He looked and saw a basket coming down river. He jumped into the waste deep water and struggled to reach the basket, seizing it in both hands before it floated out of reach. He peeled back the blanket to reveal the face of what was unmistakably a half-elf. He had heard of half-elf prejdice but this....! He took the infant to his wife and sons and explained where he had found her, and showed them the royal seal on the blanket.

"We will raise her as though she was our own," said the man's wife.

"We will treat her as our sister," procaimed the eldest of his three son's.

"Her name will be Mira," said the man,"for she will surely bring a miracle to this world.

And so the young princess became a farmer's daughter, Mira, and she grew up happy and healthy until the day her destiny changed.
