*Caleb's POV* (A/N - a new POV again! Yaaay!)
I slowly picked Emma up and ran to the nurse. I couldn't bare, when she was hurt, because it hurt me too. She was like a sister to me, the sister I never had.
My parents were always out of town. I practically raised myself on my own. But then, in preschool, I met Emma and her family. Her parents were super supportive and always let me stay with them whenever my parents were away - so I basically lived there. When they died, it was hard for me too, because they were more of a parents to me than my biological ones. I still stayed with their family a lot, but not that much as before. Now I go to their house almost every day. I don't sleep there so often but I'm there the most of my time. I just love them!
I've always wished I had a family like this. A family where they cared about each other. A family where everyone was equally loved. My parents have almost forgotten about me. They don't even know my name! When I was little, they used to send post cards from where they were. But that was ages ago. They come home usually once or twice a year and leave in a day or two again. I can't even call them my parents, because at the role of parents, they failed miserably.
When we got to the nurse, I already saw the boy, who was there with Emma, being looked at. Emma jumped from my arms and tried to limp to him. I came behind her and put my arm around her shoulders for support. I heard a loud crack and a sob coming probably from the boy. "Ry, it's going to be alright, you are so brave!" I heard Emma coo to him.
I came behind her and pulled her to me by her waist. I pulled her in my arms and laid her down on another bed. "What hurts?" I asked, holding her hands. She pointed to her stomach and face. I lifted her shirt to see some really big bruises. I cleaned them with some cloth the nurse gave me and water from the sink. Then the nurse came and fixed her nose like she fixed the boy's.
I held Emma close as she cried from the pain. She didn't take pain very well, I already knew that from before. I was also proud of her, because I knew about her fear of doctors, however, she was okay with the nurse.
I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and I got it out. I saw 14 missed calls from her brothers and tons of texts. I put it back in my pocket and focused on Emma again.
The nurse said we should take both of the kids home, so I picked her up again and walked to the lunch hall, because of her brothers.
When Owen saw me, he sprinted to me and slapped me right across my face. I was really surprised he would do that. I saw Emma's jaw clench and she got out of my grip, stood in front of him and slapped him even harder. "How dare you do that to my best friend?! Without him I would probably still be lying on the floor in the hallway!" She shouted at him. I didn't want her to hurt her brother any more, so I pulled her to me by her waist and hugged her close. "Thank you." She whispered in my ear.
I put my arm around her shoulder and walked around Owen to the boys. "I'm taking her home, we will tell you everything when you come back." I told them. Oliver smiled at me and motioned for me to come with him. I let go of Emma and followed him quickly. "Caleb, man, I'm really sorry about that slap. Owen is the most protective when it comes to Emma so he was pretty mad." He told me inspecting my cheek. "I'm okay, but thanks! I will take her home and make sure she is okay." I told him. He nodded and smiled at me. I went back to Emma and got out of school, heading home.
At home, I placed Emma on the couch and sat next to her. She shuffled closer to me so I pulled her in my lap. Even when I was sitting and she kneeling on my lap, I was still a bit higher than her. "Hey Emma, who was that other boy?" I asked her. She looked me in the eye and said "That is my cousin Ryan. Him and his three brothers live with us now. That's why Ed and I share a bed."
Oh wait! That was Ryan?! I knew Ryan but he grew so much! "And the boy who picked him up, that was Adam wasn't he?" She just nodded at me, still smiling.
We spent the rest of the afternoon just watching TV and talking. We were interrupted by a big slam which made Emma jump in my arms. We both turned around and I saw Owen again. He had a very scary look in his eyes. Emma buried her head in my chest and I put a protective arm around her. I prepared myself for the punch I thought I was going to get but then I just heard James come in. "Owen, cool it down. Go to your room, buddy." He told him patting his back. Owen sent me a last glare and went upstairs.
That night we just watched movies and laughed all together. Emma went upstairs to talk to Owen. They came down together and Owen apologized. Emma spent the rest of the afternoon laying on my lap and sleeping.
That was one of the best days of my life.
