Chapter 9
----------------------------------------
"Miranda are you almost done?" I teased as I lifted the weights a few more times, trying to get in a few more reps. Miranda and I had decided to go to the gym after work, it was something we both liked to do when we were a little too stressed out from work. For some reason more people get divorced around Christmas time, leaving both of us with more on our plates. Plus you have to add the holiday stress into the mix.
Miranda placed her barbells on the ground, removing the headphone from her ear. "Sorry did you say something?" She stuck her tongue out. I nodded my head, popping my hip out, and folding my arms.
"I have just a few more sets before I'm going to go change and head home." I smiled.
"What girl, you ain't gonna just run home in that sports bra?" She leaned forward placing her fingers on my bra strap snapping it. I smacked her hand away rubbing the spot I had been attacked.
"That was low!" I laughed throwing an accent on my words.
"Oh come on, don't be such a sissy." Miranda placed the barbell back on the rack before grabbing a larger weight.
"Who do you think you are? The Hulk?" I glanced down at the measly weights I was holding, she was lifting nearly double my weights.
"What can I say? I pick things up and I put them down!" Miranda tried to copy the Hulk's voice only for hers to crack like a twelve year old boy going through puberty. We both laughed to ourselves at how silly we were acting. Men started to look at us like we were insane. I could feel my cheeks flushing as I noticed all their eyes burning holes through my skin. Placing my head down I went back to doing more reps until they looked away.
I finished with the workout I was doing, quickly wiping down the equipment I was using and placing it back where it went. I found myself next to Miranda as she did the same thing. "Let's go girl." I couldn't help but be a little dramatic with her. She brought it out of me.
We quickly grabbed our jackets from the ladies room before heading out into the brisk winter air. We walked for a few moments next to the overly crowded streets before Miranda turned to me.
"What do you think you are going to get for Secret Santa?" I shook my head. I hadn't even thought of it. Honestly since I lost my parents I hadn't really been too into Christmas. It wasn't the same when you didn't have family to celebrate with. I was an only child and Miranda was always in Europe with her family.
"I don't know, but I need to figure out what I'm getting for my person. I haven't even thought about it." I shoved my hands in my pockets, the cold air making my ears ache a little. I never took these Secret Santa gifts too seriously, I didn't feel like anybody else cared about their secret Santa and honestly to me it felt like everybody just wanted gifts.
"We need to go shopping for that soon. I've been freaking out about what to get our boss. She is so picky." Miranda scoffed. I couldn't help but agree with her. She was right, our boss was the worst to shop for. She never provided any ideas on her sheet we all passed around to help each other out.
I bumped into a stranger accidentally trying to get out of his way as he rushed past, Christmas bags filling his hands. I tried to shout an apology but he was buried in a crowd of other frantic parents.
Miranda and I made plans to meet up sometime this week to get our Christmas shopping done before we went our separate ways. I placed my headphones back in my ears before turning my music up. My pace quickened as the music began to flow through my brain.
It took me only about fifteen minutes to get home. By the time I was closer to my house it was like swimming through a crowd of people. I hated how busy the city got this time of year, New York was busy enough on its own. It definitely did not need help.
I decided to check the mail before heading up to my floor. Stopping at the post office box I dug in my pocket for the keys. Quickly opening up the tiny silver box I pulled out the few envelopes inside, mostly bills. Reading through the addresses I noticed there was one sent from our office building. There was no name.
I quickly flipped it over ripping the top of it. Inside was a note, just like the others I had been getting. I couldn't help but smile. The words were written in what looked like a gold pen with tiny little green Christmas trees lining the bottom of the paper.
Day 5
You're a beautiful snow storm
The one that makes it feel like drinking hot chocolate
Glistening and sparkling in the sky
And it's truly what makes Christmas so special
I just hope this year you will make mine special.
Your Secret Santa
"Dammit how do you keep doing this Jonathan? Why haven't you just come talked to me yet?" I was so confused, because there was no way it wasn't him. I had busted him placing a rose and a note in my cubicle. I looked at the letter once more reading over the words until I pretty much had them memorized.
When I entered my apartment I placed the note next to the other four and cherished them for a moment longer. Jonathan was really spoiling me and I wasn't sure what for. I was excited to see if I got one tomorrow. I appreciated all the ones I had already received. I decided if he wasn't willing to tell me it was him I was going to call him out on it.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket quickly unlocking it and clicking on my contacts. After searching for him name I started writing him a text message. I wanted to make it simple, not wanting to freak him out too much.
To: Jonathan (Work)
Thank you so much for the amazing cards. They have really made my week so much better. I appreciate them. :)
