Chapter 7
----------------------------------------
"I'll have one large hot chocolate with mini marshmallows please," I smiled at the young girl behind the counter taking my order. She wore elf ears tucked beneath a little elf hat. Her red hair frizzy underneath falling in curls, fading into waves. She reminded me of the perfect little Christmas trinket.
After waiting for a few moments, the hot chocolate was placed on the counter as she waved the next customer through. I smiled, thanked the girl and met back up with Miranda.
Miranda and I head down the New York streets towards our office. We had just gotten off lunch and were trying to get back to finish our duties early. I watched the road carefully, trying not to step in the crunchy snow half melted from the sun high in the sky. My eyes caught the trees as I noticed the Christmas lights hidden so carefully. They were one of my favorite things to see every Christmas.
"I'm so sick of Barbra today." Miranda droned on about our co-worker. I smiled on the inside as Miranda told stories of Barbra stealing her pens and trying to sneak in on her clients. I couldn't help but roll my eyes, as thoughts of how silly she was danced through my head like ballerinas.
"Oh come on, she is not that bad." I tugged at my jacket sleeves, pulling them further down my arms to keep out the chilly air. It was halfway through December now and Christmas was ten days away. "Plus you need to be polite or else Santa will leave coal in your stocking." I teased her, taking a sip of the hot cocoa. She shot me a death glare leaving us to walk a little further with nothing but the sound of the snow below our feet.
I felt annoyed at the shoes I had worn to work. I found myself wishing the city would spend more time clearing their sidewalks when these big storms hit. I swirled the hot chocolate in my cup before pressing it to my lips to take another sip.
"Seriously, does Amber still believe in 'Santa Claus'." Miranda teased as she took a sip of her own drink. Now it was my turn to roll my eyes at her. She was being a dummy.
"Of course I do." I smiled as we walked through the front door of our office building. Waving at the young girl in the lobby behind the desk, we quickly made it to the elevator just in time before it swept away with other guests. Miranda and I squeezed our way to the side of the tiny room trying to not step on anyone's toes. I quickly let out a huff only loud enough for a couple of us to hear as I gave Miranda a look she knew all too well. I hated crowded elevators.
Lucky for the two of us our ride was rather short and we made it to our floor in a matter of a minute. Zipping out of the elevator we both rushed to get back to our desks. Miranda tugged at my arm as we entered the open room that everyone's cubicles were placed. I turned to look back at her realizing she had lost one of her shoes.
"Are you okay there?" I couldn't help but laugh as Miranda wobbled around on one foot trying to grasp her shoe with her free hand.
"Okay, maybe I do need to be a little nicer." She whimpers finally complete once more. I shrugged nodding my head. I knew I was right.
Once again, I tried entering our office heading towards my cubicle. I didn't have much more I needed to get done today but there was enough that I didn't really have time to waste. I rushed around the corner bumping into another person as I did so, nearly spilling my hot chocolate everywhere.
"Oh my gosh!" I shouted popping the lid back on my cup. I was met with an apologetic gaze from Jonathan. I tidied up the shirt I was wearing before asking if he was okay. He responded with a simple nod, his cheeks growing a slight red.
"Sorry, I was just trying to borrow a pencil." He seemed nervous as his hands fiddled with the belt loop on his jeans.
"Well here, let me get you one." I smiled trying to enter my cubicle. He moved to the side to block me, stopping me dead in my tracks.
"You might want to wait a second." He tried to plaster a smile on his face but it was easy to see that he was hiding something. I tried to study his face, looking for any context clues. Why was he hiding something. "Just stay here until I get back to my cubicle and everything will be fine." I cocked my head to the side. There were a million questions I wanted to ask him but I wasn't really sure where to start so I just nodded my head. With my response he rushed around me, his feet moving quickly across the floor. Just as soon as he had arrived he was gone. I shot Miranda a confused look and she shrugged before heading to her very own cubicle.
Upon entering my space, I was greeted with a bright red rose placed delicately on the top of a beautifully embroidered card. It was another note. My eyes shot over to Jonathan as he sat facing his computer head down, his hand acting as blockage from my inquisitive stare.
I picked the note up slowly preparing myself for what it said today. My heart was racing, had Jonathan been trying to sneak this in here and been caught? He would have to know that I knew he was sending these now right? Why wouldn't he just admit to it then? My eyes rushed over the words and my heart felt with warmth. I finally knew who it was that was sending these letters.
