Chapter 6
Harmony's Story
Annie fixed a nice pot roast complete with little potatoes, carrots and pearl onions, and had it all laid out on the kitchen table at five o'clock when Len arrived home from work. She ran to the door to greet him as she did every night, and threw her arms around his neck as soon as he crossed the threshold.
"Hi cutie, how was your day?" he said, kissing her freckled nose. Annie gave him a big kiss before she answered, "It was mostly a good day." "Mostly good?" Len said, narrowing his green eyes at her, while taking a seat on one of the sofas with the evening paper in his hand. "I'll tell you while we're eating dinner," Annie told him, taking his hand, pulling him up and towing him to the table.
"Wow honey! This looks great!" "Thanks," Annie said, as her new husband pulled out the chair for her. "Suppose you tell me about your day first," Annie suggested. "Okay," Len said, while putting a big bite of pot roast in his mouth. "Well....," he started....then he stopped short and said, "Hey! This is delicious!" he raved! Annie giggled and said, "You sound surprised."
"As I said before, when you hit me with that wet towel, you can never tell about a new brides' cooking. But you are an amazing cook!" "Thanks hon," Annie said, beaming at him as he gave her a salty kiss. "Yum," he said, continuing to enjoy his meal. "Your day?" Annie reminded him, picking up her fork and spearing a few carrots.
"Oh yeah. Well, I called Bobby Malone's Uncle Frank to ask him if he thought there was anyone in his former "World of Thieves" that would have taken our "Cooing Dove" painting." Annie paused with her fork half way to her mouth, a piece of potato dangling from the end of it. "I hope he wasn't insulted that you ask him?"
Len chuckled. "I was very diplomatic sweetie." "Sorry," Annie said. "Of course I know you would be." "It's okay. But when you want to catch a thief, who can help better than someone who used to be one?" Len said with a shrug. "So what did he say?" Annie asked, now very curious. Len chuckled. He said he was very happy to help. He's probably making out a list of suspects for me as we speak."
"In fact," Len said, looking at his watch, "I'm meeting him at his place in about an hour. Sorry I didn't let you know sooner hon. But I didn't want to bother you at school." "That's fine. I made a new friend today and she's going to call tonight for a private conversation. So it all works out. She has a problem she wants to talk about," Annie said, her voice cracking a little.
Len looked up to see a single tear trickling down her cheek. He immediately put down his knife and fork, took her hands in his and whispered, "Can I help?" "Thanks for offering hon. And I don't know yet. But I'll tell Harmony, that's her name, that you offered. She was going to tell me the problem in our last class but then the bell rang."
"Then she rushed off because her husband was waiting on her. And Len she was very anxious, almost frightened when she told me she had to go." I was afraid for her," Annie admitted. Her full name if Harmony Jones, and she's one of the most beautiful young women I've ever seen, and so sweet, and you just think how this girl could have anything but happiness in her life. Then the first time you meet her she tells you she has a problem and wants to talk to you about it. And you see that fear in her eyes and know it's a big deal."
