"Okay. Class dismiss" Mr Quinn said while pilling the stack of papers.
Brenna was the last to leave the class. She made her way out to rest under the tree. Just a scant minute later, Hugo appeared beside her.
He always hang out with her sometimes after lunch, and Brenna didn't know what to make of it. Everything was slowly changing.
Apparently, her situation in school has taken a drastic turn. Ever since the incident, a week ago, she was barely been bothered. Hugo is always trying to make friends with her, chasing after her like a lost puppy.
Tracy and Bianca, regretful of their behaviour, apologised to Brenna but the look on their faces told her otherwise. Daniel wasn't at all contrite but managed to be civil with her. Most of the students wouldn't even glance her way, but she was grateful that no one was paying attention to her.
She knew that the person who stopped the cutting of her hair, caused that reaction. She didn't know who that person was. She was too distraught to look up to see the person. All she gathered, however, was that the 'person' was a man. He had a deep chilling voice that scared everyone.
Brenna came out of her trance when Hugo said his greetings.
Brenna stood and stared at him, wondering what he wanted this time."Isn't it a lovely weather today?" He asked with his boyish grin. When he realised that Brenna wasn't inclined to answer him, he took the liberty in answering himself. "Yes it's a lovely weather, thats why we're all out" he added, smiling as widely as he can.
Brenna didn't move but continued to stare at him. Hugo couldn't contain his patience any longer. Letting out an exasperated sigh, he sat down beside her defeated.
"Do you find me that boring?" He sounded sad, and Brenna immediately felt guilty. "I don't know what should i do to make you talk to me" he continued with his head bowed down. "You look like you see a ghost everytime I appear infront of you" he added.
Brenna was about to apologise and tell him that she was willing to befriend him, but stopped when his eyes widen. It was like a kid receiving the best toy ever!
"Oh right!" He exclaimed. "No wonder you don't want to speak to me. Damn it!" He said, slaming his fist on the ground.
Brenna was lost. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't keep up with his constant change of moods.
"I should've known from the beginning" he continued, slamming his hand on his forehead, quite dramatically.
"I look like a ghost, don't I" he said. He wouldn't let her answer him this time. "That's why u keep ignoring me right? Oh... don't look scared, I'm not a ghost. Infact, it's because of playing...that's why i look like one" he rubbed the back of his neck and smile sheepishly.
He continued to ramble on, only stopping once in a while to catch his breath. Brenna couldn't take his never-ending chattering anymore.
Taking a deep breath, she took a book out, and started reading. Hugo stopped once he saw that Brenna wasn't paying attention to him. He shook his head and muttered incorrigible words under his breath.
He sat down adjacent to her and stared. He couldn't get her. No matter what he does, she won't even spare a glance. She always act as if he's not there. Its like it's her wont!
"Fine" He said with a defeated sigh. "I get it. You don't want to mingle with me." He held his hand up when he saw that Brenna was about to say something. "Don't. I know, and I won't bother you anymore... okay? Yes I will no longer bother you!" He added with a nod.
He stood and walked away. Brenna shook her head over his childish behaviour. She would have laugh at him, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings so she keep her mouth shut.
She went back to reading, when Hugo turned his back and called her. Brenna looked up at him. She didn't know why was he calling her, just after telling her, that he will never bother her again.
"Aren't you going to call me back?" He stood with his left hand on his hip and right hand on his forehead.
Brenna looked thoroughly confused. He must have lost his mind, she concluded.
Hugo groaned out loud, attracting attention, and marched toward Brenna. He stood with his legs apart.
Brenna thought that he must've lost something, and ask him exactly what she was thinking.
Hugo looked like he was ready to kill someone, for his hands fisted at his side, and his eyes screamed murder.
"No... I didn't lose anything" he began with a sigh. "Urrghhh... you are the most complicated person I've ever met!" When Brenna still didn't get what he meant, he stomp his feet like a kid.
Brenna would have laughed if it wasn't for his sincere discomfort. She forced herself into focusing on his prattle. But she couldn't hold her amusement any longer. She burst out in laughter. Her first real laughter she had in many years.
Hugo stopped. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He was so stunned that he forgot what he was talking about. Not only was Hugo mesmerized, but others. Everyone stopped to witnessed Brenna's lovely, melodic laughter.
Including Aiden and Devon, who went to look for Hugo.Hugo forgot what he was talking about until Brenna reminded him.
"Oh yes" He stammered "You should not act that way. No wonder you don't have friends."
He admonished.Brenna suddenly felt lonely because he stated the fact that she hate the most. Friend-less. But you can blame the girl who wanted to befriend people, but can't because nobody wants her, can you?
Hugo, not catching Brenna's change of mood, continued.
"You're suppose to run after me. Make me stop and tell me 'Hugo, I'm sorry... I'll become your dearest friend'. You should say that, not watching me walk away! Do you get me?" He didn't give time for her to answer his question, but continued to lecture her about her rude behaviour.Brenna suddenly felt loved. She could tell that Hugo was not kidding about wanting to be her friend. Her lonliness slowly faded while Hugo continued his lecture.
She finally stood up and gave Hugo her first real smile."....-ing that will not help you in futu-" he stopped when he saw Brenna. He rolled his eyes heavenward and tugged his hair.
"Now why are you smiling?" He asked appalled by her behaviour. "You are the most peculiar person I've ever met" he said and emphasised with a shake of his head.
Brenna ignored his remark and stretched her small hand to him. When Hugo continued to stare at Brenna, she nodded her head towards her hand, telling him without words to shake her hand.
Hugo, catching onto the silent message, took her pale hand into his sun-bronzed hand. He, however, was still confused over her conduct but decided to let her have her way.
"Hello. I'm Brenna Kincaid. It's a pleasure to befriend you" Brenna said when Hugo shook her hand.
Hugo laughed out loud, finally realising her intent and said,
"It is a pleasure to befriend you"And just like that, Brenna made her first loyal friend.
And just like that, she was happy to make a new friend.
And just like that, she started to look forward in having someones company.
