It was summer. I ran along the sandy shore of our river, my long sandy brown hair flowing out along behind me. The sand was soothing and cool to the touch under my bare feet as I sprinted towards the shimmering blue water. The wind was just right and the moon was brighter than I had ever seen it before. I looked behind me one more time, just to be sure that no one was following me, and I jumped into the water.
It was so cool and so calm under the surface. I waited. Soon enough, my tail formed. Brilliant turquoise  transferring into a dark midnight blue, it took my breath away every time. I stayed in the water. After a while, I surfaced again. I lay on my back and looked at the moon. I raised my hand and envisioned a small star made of water. Soon enough, the star was formed right in the palm of my hand. I thought of it hardening into a clear material even harder than obsidian. It hardened and fell into my hand.
"Y/N?" A voice asked, disbelief plain to hear.
Quickly I ducked under the water and willed my tail to disappear. My body complied, the tail faded almost instantly, leaving my with my original two legs. I resurfaced again. There, I greeted the one who had called out.
"Hey Jack." I called calmly, hoping he wouldn't notice. Of course, he did. Jackson Overland, my very best friend (and crush) of ten years, was standing there, on the shore of the river, with a mixture of wonder and shock on his perfect face.
When I noticed, I backed away slowly from him. Before I dived underneath the surface again, I heard him call one word.
"Wait!"
I paused. My body shifted into a defensive position as I stared at him, waiting. He slowly approached me.
"I won't hurt you Y/N. I just want to talk." He said.
"Like I believe that." I replied.
"Truly. I mean it. No matter who you are and what you can do, I will never hurt you. I won't let anyone hurt you." He said. He waded into the water until he was next to me and lifted my chin. Slowly, he leaned in. When his lips touched mine, my heart skipped a beat. When he pulled away, he whispered in my ear. "I promise."
That night, under the brilliant light of the moon, I gave him the star I had created. I made a cresent moon for myself and strung them both on separate necklaces. It was a symbol of our promise.
